Four friends and I had a fantastic 4 day White Rim tour with Magpie Cycling. We went the second week of September and had very nice weather. The hottest days were in the low 90s F with very low humidity, and the coolest nights were low 50s with some dew. This is not a rails-to-trails experience. There are 1000 foot climbs and descents. I’d put myself at the top of the 25th percentile of regular Peloton stationary bikers, and I had to walk my bike up the steepest slopes and take a good hour of recovery at the end of the tough days’ ride. That said by day 2 we were trying for “air” when we found a nice jump on a downhill run even though we were mountain bike neophytes, and every picture from the trip shows ear-to-ear smiles on everyone.
Mike Adler (a.k.a. John Wesley Powell II) & Mike Rundle (a.k.a. the Good Samaritan) were our AWESOME guides. We were taught about the geology, ecology, and history in ways that demonstrated a real understanding and love of Canyonlands, and respect for the bad-ass explorers that brought it to the nation’s attention. Two of our party are vegetarians, and the Vegetarian / Pescatarian food they served up was praised by all. They led us on some excellent side excursions. Mike Rundle also demonstrated the kind of people they are when he helped a couple in a broken down Jeep get back to cell phone service where they could call for assistance.
A couple of side notes that contradict what you find on their web site: they supplied camp chairs, bike tools, and occasional recharges of small devices for those who forgot their battery packs. I highly recommend the trip and the outfit, and I am looking forward to my next trip with Magpie, Adler, and Rundle.
