Sunset Cultural Center
This is the meeting place for Carmel Food Tours. Look for the tall, Gothic-style arch and huge windows. It looks a little like a church, but it's not. When you descend into the courtyard, which is located EXACTLY at the intersection of 9th & San Carlos, you'll be greeted by your tour guide.

Our guide was Bonnie. Our group consisted of 7, 3 couples and me. Bonnie immediately made us all feel welcome and comfortable with each other. We became fast friends. The tour was informative and easy walking. Bonnie did more than just talk about food, she gave us really interesting facts about the area, having been born and raised there. The restaurants we visited were great. They welcomed us and they all talked about their restaurant and the food we were going to taste. I had a really nice afternoon with some very nice people. There was plenty of food, I didn't eat again till dinner! Thanks Bonnie!

On a girls get-a-way, a dear friend treated me to the Carmel Food Tour, and what a treat it was. I knew it was going to be special from the get go because of the energy, humor and knowledge our guide Migdahlia put out in just her introduction. She let us know that we would be eating, drinking and learning a bit about Carmel as we meandered through the city. Our first stop was Anton & Michel for a delicious taste (more than a taste, all the places we stopped were very generous) of short ribs on Polenta with a glass of delicious wine. From there, Mig took us to Carmel Honey Company, and what a surprise that was. I'm not a big honey lover, but the creative tastes of different flavored honeys on cheeses, fruits and crackers made me sit up and take notice. Bought two kinds of honey, can't wait to shake up my appetizer choices. We had great pulled pork sandwiches at 400 degrees, olive oil and balsamic vinegar tasting at Trio Carmel, incredible Ziti Bolognese at La Balena, Tiramisu at Cantinetta Luca, and mouthwatering chocolates at Lula's. And along the way, Mig gave us bits of history, funny stories, and other restaurant recommendations, all the while leading us through hidden walkways and courtyards that made it all magical. To top is off, we also received a discount on our purchases at these places, which I happily took full advantage of. So from now on, when we come to Carmel, this food tour will definitely be on my list of must do's.

We booked this as a birthday present for a friend, and obviously had to go too! So glad we did this while in Carmel. We visited 7 different shops/restaurants, all totally different but great quality food and definitely enough for lunch - we even got a taste of kumquatcello which wasn't normally included. The olive oil tasting was the biggest surprise for me, so many different ways to use it. Our guide was happy to answer any questions, and this a great way to learn your way around Carmel, so worth doing the tour early on in your stay if you've not been before.
