Charleston: Off The Beaten Path

Overview
Peace and quiet is what makes this tour special. We walk the streets in a less traveled part of the historic district passing beautiful gardens, stately homes, and visit the inside of two breathtaking churches. This is a part of the city missed by the average guest, and one that you surely wouldn't want to miss yourself.

What To Expect
1
St. Michael's Church
During the week we go into the church which has been standing longer than any other house of worship in the city, 1761. See three Tiffany stained glass windows, and the famous pew 43.
2
Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist
This is like walking into Europe. Without a doubt this is the most beautiful interior in the city.
3
Battery & White Point Gardens
Once an oyster bed known as White Point, this area was developed on landfill specifically for a park. It served as a battery of cannons during the Civil War and was also the site of the execution of Steve Bonnet, the Gentleman Pirate.

Evans Byrd was our tour guide. He is a native Charlestonian with a wealth of knowledge and humor! We had a great time and loved being immersed in the charm and history on the tour!

A friend and I and our two toddlers went on this tour and really enjoyed it. Evans is extremely knowledgeable about Charleston and the areas he takes you through are populated only by locals and the ocassional carriage tour. If you only take one walking tour through Charleston, make it this one!

Evans is an 8th generation Charlestonian with loads of knowledge about the history of Charleston and all of the passion to deliver the stories in a way that keeps you engaged during the tour! He knows all of the secrets and treasures of Charleston and it’s shown with his knowledge of each plant we passed by, the homes and their history, and by helping us plan the rest of our day with restaurant recommendations (that we loved by the way)! He spent extra time with us and took us to the Unitarian Churches gardens which we would have never found on our own! Definitely loved our tour! Thanks Evans!
