Our guide was James. He is very knowledgable and answered questions. He has a good sense of humor (this is important in my opinion as it greatly enhances the experience).
We started at the brick building inside the Castle Clinton at the battery park. James had a flag from the tour company, making it easier to locate him at every location. We did quick introductions as others arrived. He explained the history and significance of Liberty island, the statue itself and Ellis island (later on that island). He pointed to the places where the best pictures would be taken from. He even took our pictures. From Liberty island, we proceeded to Ellis island on the next ferry. On Ellis island, after the history and details were shared, he left us to explore it on our own. This makes sense because different people may want to spend different amounts of time there. The guide cannot wait in case people start looking for their ancestors’ names for hours. James did give us clear instructions about boarding the next ferry back to New York City (Battery Park). Ferries arrive there every 20 - 25 minutes. So, it was easy to return to NYC. Overall, it was a good tour, well worth it.
Note: the cafe on Liberty island had a long line and was crowded. However, the cafe on Ellis island had a shorter line. Eating at an outside bench on Ellis Island with a nice view was another good experience.
