Tour-goers will also see our world-class artistic and cultural organizations: The Ringling Museum, Ringling College, Asolo Theater, Selby Library, Van Wezel Performing Arts Center, Selby Gardens, Sarasota Opera House, Art Center Sarasota, Sarasota Symphony Orchestra. Guests will learn more about the architects and developers who designed some of our most unique homes and buildings like the Blue Pagoda, Crocker Memorial Church, and Splendida. This was our second tour with Discover Sarasota. They are generally informative and interesting, but Siggy the driver wants to get in on the tour commentary too often, interrupting with kitschy stories. But at least he is harmless, the tour guide of the Circus tour was great, but the tour guide for the City Tour was uncomfortably sexist and racist, from an earlier generation. We would have exited the tour if we could have easily. Explaining the homeless as “unfortunate tourists who hadn’t yet found their hotel for the night”. And stating when describing the historic Black area of Newtown as happy people who blended in well and with who the town never had a problem”. And objectifying women. I hope the owners clean up these kinds of comments, they’re wrong.

If you are interested in further exploring the Rosemary District and Newtown, you might consider taking the Newtown Trolley tour with our colleagues who delve more fully into the history of African Americans in Sarasota. It's a wonderful tour.
