Civil Rights Tour of Nashville

Overview
It is a little-known fact that Nashville was at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement. Students at local historically Black colleges and universities led the way in nonviolent protests in the 1950s and 60s.

Journey with us to attractions and local hideaways around the city that are significant to the Civil Rights Movement on this walking tour.

On this downtown walking tour, you’ll experience the civil rights story and gain renewed activism around race and equality. You’ll learn about the key leaders and events of the movement. This tour reminds us all that the movement is a part of American history, not just African American history.

Chaquita Patterson started United Street Tours as a way to help us all understand the history of the Civil Rights movement, the role that music, businesses, families, individuals, and the community had then and now. Chaquita was engaging for our group of 30 people making us laugh, think, and honor a city with rich tradition that is not going to be found in your average convention and visitor's bureau tour. The stories and insight Chaquita provided were stellar and made this tour enjoyable and educational. You are not seeing Nashville if you are not spending time on this tour.

All of United Street Tours contain information above and beyond most city tours. We used the Civil Rights Tour as part of our school's professional development for teachers, including many native Nashvillians. We all learned things we had never known about our city's history and the people who impacted its development. Chakita was also amazing at linking historical information to present day action. UST provides a critical service for Nashville!
