I love Alaska and it has become my favorite vacation destination. This year I decided to try something different and sign up for the Denali Backcountry Safari. From hotel room to hotel room, it was about 4.5 hours. We were driven by shuttle van from Denali to a remote (but posh) "camp" at the end of the Stampede Road. From there, we got on board a Pinzgauer 6x6, a refurbished European Army truck that took us past the end of the easy road and deep down some forgotten mining trails. If you are familiar with the Book or Movie "Into the Wild" it's the same trail that Christopher's McCandless hiked out to the Magic Bus. The safari truck was driven by a knowledgeable guide. She has spent years living in remote Alaska and was a wealth of knowledge about the mining history of the area, the wildlife (we saw a mama moose and two baby moose), and more. She kept the tour fun and informative and was pretty great at driving the rig down the trail, too. At the end, we got back to the camp where Alaskan Brats and Blueberry Popcorn made for a tasty snack. The trip back to the hotel was pleasant and the shuttle driver was nice and informative as well. This trip is well worth the cost and I'd recommend it for all ages.
