I hate to write negatively about this excursion, because all of the employees of the company were so very kind and competent, and I know that the excursions for the most part of the season would be worthwhile. However, we had been warned by two parties at our hotel, and didn't listen to them, so I am posting this so that others may be alert in the future. It was a very disappointing experience for us. Because we went late in the season (the end of August) and it was getting dark out early, the trip was unbelievably rushed. We were at the end of the caravan of five jeeps. From the very beginning, we heard, "We have to hurry; it will be getting dark soon!" over and over. By the time our jeep would arrive at a stop, we had hardly any time to relax and take pictures, The jeeps were, in our opinion, going way too fast for safety. We have had jeeps and have done off-roading for years so we were experienced with driving them. However, it was NOT comfortable bouncing along with the speeds we were doing on those gravel roads, which had a lot of washboard areas. We were worried about the other drivers and wondered how the company could put both their customers and their jeeps at risk. If you do want to take the Jeep Excursion, do an early morning tour, unless you go early in the season. So many more people could have enjoyed this tour, if it had been moved up earlier (even an hour would have helped) in the day. The Denali Highway IS beautiful, and the company planned a great route and had updated jeeps. The planned stops had bathroom breaks and even snacks. But the evening tour was not a leisurely sightseeing tour; it was a mad race. Even our driver said that he has been trying to get the "higher ups" to move the evening tour up to earlier in the day, and he suggested that we put this on Trip Advisor so that they may listen to the reviews.

My wife and I signed up for this excursion because we wanted a chance to get out on the Denali Highway and the car rental company wouldn't allow us to take our rental on it. The weather that day was less than perfect, being cloudy and overcast, which obscured views of the glaciers and some of the summits. However, in spite of the weather we felt the excursion was very enjoyable and worthwhile. Our guide was excellent and provided a lot of good information about the road and area. The fall colors had arrived and were beautiful, and we were still able to get many good views of the area. We also saw some caribou and eagles. All in all, we were happy that we booked the tour.

We wanted to get some addtional sightseeing time in the Denali area to supplement the bus tour inside the park. The company will pick you up at your hotel and take you to their garages about a half hour south. Once there, they assign a jeep and your party of 4 take off on paved road. Eventually you get to the turn off for the gravel road that you follow to a point about and hour away. From there you head back on the same road. The scenery is very beautiful and you do have the opportunity to see wildlife althought it is not guaranteed. We saw a moose and calf along side the road on the way back. The lead driver will communicate with you by cb radio and does a narrative as you drive along the road, He will stop to point out various sights along the way and if you spot an animal let the group know on the radio and all will stop. There is no off roading involved and anyone with a drivers license could manage the trip if you wanted to drive. If not you could just sit back and let someone else in your party drive.
