Distillery Tour

Overview
Join us for a one-hour guided tour of J. Rieger & Co., Kansas City’s iconic distillery, located in the historic Electric Park neighborhood of the East Bottoms district. Discover the history of our brand, from its founding during the wild and raucous years when the city boasted “the wettest block in the world”, to its premature demise at the dawn of Prohibition, and eventual revival in 2014, nearly a century later.

Enjoy extensive access to each phase of the distillation process, from grain to bottle. The tour will conclude with a tasting of our four core products led by one of our knowledgeable guides.

My wife and I went with friends to the Rieger Distillery and had an early meal in The Monogram Lounge. We started off with a good Heim Beer ($6) and a Chardonnay ($9). We had the very large Local Greens Salad with apples, cheese, nuts, etc. ($11), and Tomato Bisque soup ($7), warm smoked nuts ($5), warm marinated olives ($8) and a Sliced Prime Rib Panini ($16), and the Rieger Club sandwich ($14). They kindly kitchen split the sandwiches and chips. The tomato bisque was large and very tasty we definitely will do that again. The salad was very large and very good as well, but we had too much food and hardly ate much of it. The Panini was served with au jus. One liked it while the other thought it was just ok. My wife and I liked our Club sandwich and while it was good it seemed some what typical. I believe we will try the Cheese and Charcuterie board next time. Three items ($16) and five ($24). The venue was fantastic and had an overlook into the distillery and an awesome history display area of the East and West Bottoms an The Heim and Rieger families. The ambiance was fun and the service was quite good. My friend and I even took the curved slide down to the lobby. We will be back and do the Distillery tour as well next time.

I want to start this review by saying that we are the penultimate Kansas City business supporters. We also love Rieger products. Not to mention, we have been loyal Ca Va patrons since the day it opened. But we came to the Rieger distillery tonight on a whim. And we asked should we go upstairs or go to the Hey Hey club. They said they could accommodate us downstairs. So we went and waited 15 minutes before there was even a host present. When the host finally came out he took in a party of the limpest tools in Kansas City who were in line behind us because the owner, Andy Rieger, was with them. So we waited 5 more minutes before even speaking with staff. Then the host said, well it’s going to be 30 minutes so head upstairs for a drink and we will come get you. So we finally went upstairs for a drink. Where we had two truly mediocre cocktails and asked for our check and ordered an Uber. Honestly I can’t tell you what I am more mad about - the hospitality at the Hey Hey club or the crappy cocktails or waiting to cross the train tracks in our Uber. And I want to like this place, I do. But I can’t imagine ever going back to a place where the owner goes in to their “super special elite bar” before paying customers who have been waiting in line for 20 minutes. This is not what Kansas City is about. This was a huge waste of precious babysitter time for loyal Kansas City customers. We will not be back.

I brought some out of town guests for the tour and it did not disappoint. Excellent guide and as well as learning all about the distillery there was a nice history lesson of the area too. Great cocktails at the end of the tour. We also had a drink and food in the bar afterwards and that too was excellent. All round great experience and will definitely visit again.
