After meeting your foodie guide at the first restaurant location in downtown Charleston, you will begin your walking tour and visit 3-4 restaurants, where you'll sample dishes at each, and then a final stop for dessert. Each visit lasts 20 to 30 minutes, and you'll be seated to rest your legs. For most people, the amount of food served is enough for a meal. I’m a foodie and my girlfriend and I have been on several food tours throughout our travels together. This was one of the best experiences thus far. We did the 3 o’clock tour with Mimi who was an excellent guide. We started out at Eli’s table with chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, and sweet potato pancakes. The food was family style and very tasty. Only drawback was two folks didn’t get a shrimp with their grits and things seemed a bit confused so they just moved on. Next we went to Craftsmen Kitchen and Taphouse for some really interesting bites. Smoked street corn with aioli, pressed pulled pork in a spring roll wrapper, and one of their best selling appys, the crispy potato bomb with smoked cheddar and house cured bacon. They have over 50 beers on tap and something like 500 bottled beers to choose from! From there we went to Low Country Bistro where we had the She Crab Soup and some delicious Market Jambalaya. The jambalaya is different from a New Orleans style as it has no okra and is less stew like. We finished with a delicious little lemon curd dessert which had a sugar cookie poppy seed crust topped with cream cheese and chantilly cream and salted caramel. This was exceptional and the pastry chef came out to describe it which was a nice touch. We were a bit disappointed in the small single serving dessert but we made quick friends with another couple and Mimi guided us to another great place for second dessert after the actual tour was over. She was so accommodating and knowledgeable; just the consummate hostess. Her knowledge of the deep history and personal connection with Charleston (12 generations I think) made this a very informative tour. We actually learned more detailed and interesting history than we did on one of the local plantations! The only negative was that many of the restaurants had what seemed like a bit more of a wait to get our food out than would be expected, but our particular group had many vibrant personalities so we got to socialize quite a bit. Bottom line. Do it!!

My husband and I did the Culinary tour yesterday with Dustin. First, I must say he was an incredible tour guide. Ask for him! It felt like we were spending the day with a group of long time friends - it was that comfortable and fun. Dustin knows so much about the evolution of food in the area but also the history of Charleston. We walked through beautiful streets and he pointed out lots of important sites and shared the history. We stopped at 4 different restaurants and had a wide variety of food to taste. It was a lot of food! So go hungry! This was the highlight of our weekend and we are excited to try a different tour when we visit again!
