My granddaughter and I greatly enjoyed the 3:00 food tour with “Houn” Calhoun. He was a great guide and funny as well, with his recollections about growing up here! He made the tour very fun, talked with everyone and had a number of great personal stories about the area and about low country cooking – Pimento Cheese, Dukes Mayo, Carolina Gold Rice and of course - Grits. He definitely made our tour! We started out at Eli’s Table, my favorite. We tried their sweet potato pancakes, shrimp and grits and chicken & waffles. All were great! The second stop was Poogan’s Smoke House, we had pimento cheese fritters, mini pulled pork sliders and cornbread with bacon dripping butter. The next stop was Low Country Bistro, they provided oyster (cooked) in a butter sauce, fried green tomatoes with cheese grit base and fried whole green okra. These were tasty as well. The final stop for dessert was at Burwells Stone Fire Grill. We had a very light peanut butter mousse drizzled with chocolate and some rice krispies for crunch. The chef came out and talked to us about how he created it. Houn also stated that they had great beef dishes on their menu here. The walking portion of the tour and the insights the guide offered throughout were what made the tour fun and informative. The portions are pretty generous - you might want to skip lunch before starting the tour!
