Nowhere else in California can you drive your vehicle on a public beach, so take advantage of the unique opportunity to cruise down the scenic Pacific shoreline before you get to speed, zoom and zip your way along miles of Pismo's popular sand dunes. This 2-hour dune buggy experience includes all safety gear and instruction as well as a dunes support team to help you on your adventure if you get stuck or need assistance!

What To Expect

Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area

Rent your dune buggy in Oceano, just 5 minutes down the road from Pismo Beach, at your selected time. Get fitted with your gear and receive a safety orientation. You will then hop on our complimentary beach shuttle which will drive you a mile down the beach to the OHV staging area. Hop in the driver's seat or passenger's seat of your fully automatic, Big Paddle Tirer Dune Buggy and zoom off through the Oceano Dunes.

The dune buggy experience was great. The folks running the place were great after being embarrassed because Trip Advisor charged us a 30% commission for this experience. The dune buggy company went out of their way giving us extras and additional time on the dunes because of the huge over charge from Trip Advisor.

So we're novices and were getting the hang of how to drive in the sand. Unfortunately we dug our buggy's wheels deep in the sand until our hero, Logan Knight (from customer service) drove over and pulled us out in two minutes flat. A little after, we got stuck in this bowl over by around marker #21 (stay away from it!!) and even Logan was having a tough time getting our buggy out, but he amazingly managed to bring it out. Unfortunately the time we spent waiting ate up about an hour, and the policy is that if you return the buggy late you get charged a full hour. Between the frustration, the worry and the lost hour made the experience kind of disappointing, but maybe if we go again, the next time will be better.
