Exploring Common Ground Walking Tour in Kauai

Overview
We believe a meal on Kauai should be unique and represent the abundance, flavors and cultures of the island.! Our experience offers a showcase of what grows on Kauai in our regenerative food forest: A collection of exotic and delicious foods brought to Hawai`i from all corners of the globe. Coffee, pineapple, tree tomato, kava, mamak'i, heart of palm, papaya, bananas, and more! More importantly it demonstrates a model for how food can be grown in harmony with nature, planted in concert so there is no need for imported fertilizers and pesticides. The tour concludes with a family style meal to savor and enjoy while celebrating the delicious diversity that exists on Kauai all while exploring our mission here at Common Ground. 100% Island sourced because it should be, from the cooking oil to the seasonings. Relax into a perfect island evening in a beautiful tropical farm setting.

For the price I was expecting more. The ā€œFarmā€ the size of a garden. I really have nothing positive to say about the tour. You walk around several planting beds and are told that the plants are planted in a way that allows them to get light as they grow up. I was really looking forward to the dinner and a farm to table experience. The meal was mostly inedible. Everything was super bitter, the soup was horrendous a mix of too sour and too bitter. The vegetables were inedible as they were burned and too bitter. The gratin was tasteless and mushy. Everyone at our table shared the same disappointment and displeasure with the meal. The dessert was embarrassing, it was a tiny scoop of sorbet covered with so many flower petals you had to remove them and we all had a pile of flower petals larger than the scoop of sorbet. Drinks are extra. I would not recommend this experience at all.

At Common Ground we always aim to provide an experience that is fun, delicious and authentic. The tour features a walk through our one acre food forest where our guides highlight the practices used in establishing and maintaining a diverse agroforest. We pride ourselves on including information that is accurate and based off the decades of experience of our team. We always aim to make the tour interesting and informative to a wide range of guests from those with extensive agriculture backgrounds to others just looking to have an evening out. We take the same approach with our meals, aiming to offer a delicious and authentic experience featuring 100% locally sourced ingredients, and everything made from scratch by our team of chefs. We try to accommodate a wide variety of tastes and allergies with the food we serve, all while reflecting the ingredients, traditions and flavors of Hawaii.

The food was very good. The tour was influenced. Now things that I think could be improved: -Start on time or at least within the first half hour that you say the start time is said to be. -Let’s not let the guest know that the food wasn’t put out in the order that it usually is( a older female employee kept going on and on about the food not being out and became quite annoying) guess what? Wouldn’t have know if she didn’t voice it. - it would be nice for the cost of the experience to make the tables look a little more formal. I know it’s Hawaii and it’s laid back, but still have respect for how hard it was to create the food by making a more formal dining experience. - a warning about the mosquitos would have been nice and maybe had bottles of some kind of natural repellent to be offered ( they had it for sale in the little gift shop) but a warning would have been nice. - ok this sounds nitpicking but the chef kept clapping his hands while he was talking about the food and that was also very distracting as well. My group was not the only ones annoyed by it the whole group was commenting about it.

My wife and I did both the Lei making and food experience at Common Ground on our recent trip to Kaua'i. We highly recommend BOTH experiences! Learning the cultural significance of Lei making was a treat, and we had enough time to make bracelets for one another - and made some friends along the wat. The dinner and farm tour were also fabulous. The staff was warm and enthusiastic about their regenerative "food forest," and the meal itself was wonderful. More than anything it warmed our hearts to see people taking such good care of the land, and giving back to Mother Nature.
