Our tour guide was at our hotel promptly. He took us on a brief tour of Fairbanks, the Morris Thompson Cultural Center, a segment of the Alaskan pipeline, the Museum of the North at the University of Alaska, and a visit to North Pole, a town outside of Fairbanks that has a year-round Christmas shop. He walked us through the Morris Thompson Cultural Center. The highlight was the Museum of the North. Admission was included in the tour, but it was self-guided. They have a magnificent collection of artifacts, bones, art, and more. The pipeline segment was interesting. I could have done without the Christmas Shop.

With all due respect, Fairbanks is not the hotbed of history. The museums we saw on this tour were, never the less, good examples of the history of the area. The challenges of the pipeline, the changes of the seasons, the expulsion of the Japanese, the fossils, the stuffed wildlife, the Alaskan Native culture were all on display. Interesting, but my socks we're blown off. The North Pole was a terrific shop, but be prepared: that is all it is. They do have 8 reindeer (of course) which were outside and very animated. Our guide (Lynnlee???) was terrific. Easy to talk to, full of observations and tidbits. I learned a lot about Alaskan weather from her. Ice Fog: who knew??? All in all it was a very good day.

It was a good tour. Our tour guide Randy was very informative and quite a character. He was our guide the day before going to the arctic circle. I really enjoyed going to the North Pole and meeting Santa.
