We had a great time on the Backcountry Boat Tour, looking at birds, trees, plants, reptiles that our naturalist, Anna, pointed out to us along the way. Through the canals (Wilderness Waterway and Tarpon Creek) we saw a manatee/sea cow munching on low-hanging leaves, crocodiles sunning on logs, colorful birds perched and in flight. It was fun to change up the pace by speeding across the open water of Coot Bay.
Naturalist Anna and the Captain were great: fun, helpful, full of information. While we were relaxing and looking, they were constantly on the lookout for things we might be interested in: bird in flight, reptile (croc) or mammal (manatee), plant life. They made the trip as great as it was.
It's about 45 minutes to Flamingo from the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center at the entrance to the Everglades National Park. You might want to consider staying overnight - the new lodge and restaurant in Flamingo makes it easy - with a balcony looking at Florida Bay.
Visited Flamingo with friends of 50 years in early March 2024. We rented bikes and rode some of the unpaved roads, stayed in the new lodge for 2 nights, ate at the new restaurant. A good trip - with the Backcountry Boat Tour a highlight of our visit.
