Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio
In 1889 Wright completed the construction of a small two-story residence in Oak Park on the Western edges of Chicago. The building was the first over which Wright exerted complete artistic control. Designed as a home for his family, the Oak Park residence was a site of experimentation for the young architect during the twenty-year period he lived there. Wright revised the design of the building multiple times, continually refining ideas that would shape his work for decades to come.

To be honest, I wasn't expecting much. I didn't know very much about Frank Lloyd Wright, but I love touring homes and my husband suggested, so I thought why not? This did not disappoint! The home was beautiful and each room was so thoughtfully done. I kept having to remind me myself that it was all done more than 100 years ago! We arrived 30 minutes after our timed ticket (due to Chicago traffic and our uber driver who more interested in talking instead of following the gps). Luckily, the next tour group wasn't full so we were able to hop in with them. Anne was our tour guide and she was absolutely phenomenal. She answered all of the questions and incredibly knowledgeable about FLW. You can tell she has a passion for his work and we felt that the entire time. We ended up doing the self-guided walking tour as well. We were given handheld devices and a map. The house were easy to find since they were all on the same street. We had a such a great time and worth the trip! Thank you Anne, Darryl & Michelle! I'd like to note that it did take a while to get an uber after the tour (about 30 mins wait), since it's not in a popular area. So keep that in mind if that's how you get there.

Anyone who appreciates architecture, art, engineering, and/or design will appreciate this tour! FLW's clever approach to his craft is balanced with his personal home life. Fascinating details and historical tidbits are explained by docent tour guide. One flight of stairs up and back down are part of tour. Our teen and pre-teen really enjoyed this tour. Do not book tour tickets through Tripavisor; instead, book through actual FLW website for accurate pricing and availability. Only 9 tickets are allowed to be purchased online for each tour time slot, but tour group was larger with likely walk-ins. Ample free parking on residential side streets (just note parking signs).

This was a highlight of our trip!! It was an excellent tour. The guide and the entire staff were kind, friendly, and knowledgeable. The history and architecture were presented to allow everyone on the tour to gain more understanding of his amazing talent. The neighborhood and walking tour were amazing also. They also took the time to speak with you as an individual. Definitely make this a destination. IF you take the train from the airport use the center transfer station and switch trains to get closer to the area. Oh and eat local, the restaurants and cafes were great!
