In a city as beautiful as historic Charleston, itās easy to simply immerse yourself in the charm. But I felt like something was missing from the Disney-esque, frozen-in-time feeling being pushed on tourists. Iām so glad we heard about Franklinās walking tour because it gave us a powerful glimpse into the full reality of Charlestonās past through the lens of Black history.
Franklin has a bottomless knowledge of those who lived in āthe other Charleston.ā Standing on any patch of land, he can look around and share stories from the funny, to the triumphant, to the heartbreaking. I loved learning the names of great Black leaders like Denmark Vesey and seeing the very buildings where free Black artisans practiced their crafts. As knowledgeable as he is, Franklin also has a curiosity to keep learning and to engage his guests in real conversation. Heās not just a tour guideāheās a true educator, pushing us to think critically and stirring our desire to learn more. I appreciated that Franklin previously spent 20 years driving a bus and hearing the standard, scripted version of Charleston, so he knew exactly what was missing. He expertly filled in the gaps and called out what was just plain wrong in the narratives weāve heard for so long.
As James Baldwin said, āNot everything that is faced can be changed. But nothing can be changed until it is faced.ā Thank you for giving us the chance to face not only the horrors of slavery and its legacy through today, but also to celebrate the artistry, knowledge, contributions and resistance of African American Charlestonians.
I would take this tour again and again, and I recommend it to anyone who wants an engaging, enlightening experience with a warm, funny, and generous soul. Thank you Franklin!!
