From Ma'alaea Harbor, Maui: Molokini Snorkeling Adventure Aboard Calypso

Overview
Explore the natural wonders of Molokini Crater, a volcanic islet 3 miles (4.8 km) off the coast of Maui, on this snorkeling tour from Maalaea. Surrounded by clear tropical waters, this extinct cone is home to many species of marine life, such as fish, sea urchins, sharks, manta rays, and coral. Molokini is a marine preserve, meaning nothing can be disturbed, keeping the island and underwater environment pristine. You'll also explore Turtle Town, and admire native birds. Two water slides, a glass bottom viewing room, and a "leap of faith" are also available if you don't want to snorkel or finish early. Breakfast, lunch, snacks, soda, and juice are included.

Overall this was a nice experience. Get there early to pick the seat you want (top level is most rocky if you get sick easy, don't sit there), they serve breakfast and lunch, the crew and captain are very nice and very accommodating. Snorkeling at both Molokini Crater and Turtle Town was not what I expected it to be... I thought there would be an abundance of coral and sea life but there really wasn't. In fact, a lot of the coral around the island has died. I wish the tours, the Maui government, locals, restaurants, etc would offer more education about that. When you see coral that is white, or has algae growing on it, it's dead. That's the result of human factors, non-zinc or non-titanium oxide sunscreens, and global warming. The tours have such an incredible platform for educating tourists about how we could make a positive impact on the island but they aren't using it and that's sad. We heard "don't use spray sunscreen, it gets all over the boat", not "Don't use spray sunscreen, even if mineral based it has chemicals that kill the ocean life". Fun Fact: No one wants to pay to go on an ocean tour, if there's no coral and/or no ocean life. So even if it's a business move, educate the public. And just to complain a little more: Watching people's breakfast/lunch plates, cans, and cups blow off the boat because they are paper, that sucked too.

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a detailed review! We couldn't agree more, that using reef-safe sunscreen is vital to protecting our coral reefs. We are so pleased to hear that you had a fun and safe boating adventure aboard Calypso!

Crew was friendly and helpful. Food was decent. They made an effort for everyone to see whales, dolphins and turtles. The boat was comfortableā€¦ get there early to get a seat if your choice. Overall a great experience. The sea is traditionally rocky and wavy so expect a lot of swaying on the boat and even in the water snorkeling.

We just got finished with our Molikini Crater Excursion in Maui. We were extremely dissatisfied as we did not go to Molikini Crater because of wind. Going to Molikini Crater was the soul reason we chose to come to Maui because of the world class snorkeling and visibility there. Also was the soul reason for booking this trip. It was our last day on Maui and it was supposed to be the finale of our trip as we've been snorkeling all week on the shores. It was a very disappointing last day not getting to snorkel at Molikini Crater. We were also promised getting to go to another sight for snorkeling and whale watching but that didn't not occur. We stayed at the same spot for snorkeling which was decent and saw turtles but not what was advertised as two differentsnorkeling locations. We did take the boat to a turtle place for a few minutes but we did not get to snokel there. We are extremely disappointed in this excision. I would not book a Calypso Cruise. There are way too many people on cruise, we were the last boat to leave the harbor and we stayed close to the shore by the highway for snorkeling which is what we've done on our own all week. The point of the trip was to go on a boat ride to Molikini Crater or somewhere we couldn't have just gone to on the side of the hyway. They did nothing for the 150 people on the boat for not going to the planned destination. No partial refund. Nothing. Poor customer service. Go with a smaller company that's not just trying to make a ton of money. This is a very overrated cruise. Don't book this excursion
