We took the tour on the afternoon we arrived; worth noting that when half our party’s flight was delayed, I called the tour company twice troubleshooting and they were very helpful. Our tour guide / driver, a retired math teacher, was awesome. He was friendly and comfortable, and very knowledgeable. Where some guides do what they need to and no more, he went above and beyond; at stops, he got out and walked around, looking for opportunities to point things out to any members of the group he came across. The great salt lake is... something. Something to see and experience, but for curiosity, not because it is the best place for much of anything. It is pretty gross with the brine shrimp, flies, and gulls, so what is really interesting is the chance to really understand it, its history, and its ecosystem, and this tour was the perfect way to do that. Pointing out lots along the way, our driver was an expert narrator. There were only two stops to get out, one for 15 minutes at the ill fated Saltair III building (our driver had us fully up to date on the history of the Saltairs by the time of our stop), and one for about 35 minutes at the very small Great Salt Lake Visitor’s Center, just enough time to see the center, walk down to the lake and experience it firsthand (including a brief dip just to experience the lake’s buoyancy effect if you bring swimwear and can stomach the ickiness), and then leave feeling that’s really all the time you’d need or want to spend anyway. Our driver had caught a few live brine shrimp during the stop to greet us with in return to the bus, so that we could get a good look. Very good with our four year old as well. We took another tour from the same company the following morning, and were thrilled to have the same driver - he really was what made this a worthwhile experience.

We were satisfied with this tour, and a big reason was that our bus driver/tour guide (Jim) filled a lot of the long bus ride with interesting history (geologic, zoologic, and human) and information. If you don't get a good guide, I can see how you might not like this tour. Our guide scooped some brine shrimp from the lake to show us, and pointed out some other interesting things while not driving the bus. I had heard a lot about how the salinity of the lake creates unusual buoyancy for swimmers and wanted to try it out. I found that the only changing facilities were the bathrooms at the small visitor center at the lake, awkward but manageable. I spent 5-10 minutes in the water, confirmed the buoyancy effect, then got out and changed. This is no place for a nice swim. It was shallow (I went out about 100 yards and the water never reached my chest), it was warm (at least 80F), and it was unpleasant due to the swarms of flies at the edge of the beach. I was glad I experienced it but I'd never do it again. The tour stopped briefly at Saltair 3, a failed event venue, which wasn't too impressive. I guess if you are going out that way anyway you might as well see it, but don't expect much. As I said, if you get a good guide this can be worthwhile. If you don't, you could be pretty disappointed.

My recent tour of the Great Salt Lake was delightful . It was a last minute decision on our part to join since we arrived in SLC fairly early to get settled in our Hyatt House but late enough to arrange hotel pick up . The tour guide dropped us off where we were staying after a good 2 hour drive and tour of this geographical landmark . On our way there , we saw some economical and historical interest sites of SLC.
