Kula
Maui’s rich farming and ranching history is still evident by the vast pastures that line the side of the mountain. Kula’s cool weather and rich volcanic soil make the area an ideal spot for a number of Lavender, Protea, and Macadamia Nut farms.
3
Makawao
The Hawaiian Cowboys or Paniolos have roots set deep in the town of Makawao. This small town still has hitching rails at storefronts just as the locals once used to tie up their horses.
4
Paia
Today Pa’ia is a popular surf destination, however, Pa’ia’s history is as intriguing as it is fascinating. Learn about how the Sugar Plantations shaped this town and the culture of the island, and how this small north shore town was once a gathering place for entertainment and fun.

As an older woman traveling solo, I chose this tour rather than driving myself up to Haleakala. While others rode back down on bikes, I chose to ride back in the van. Kimo provided humor and great historical information about Hawaii and specifically Maui on the whole trip. Back down from the crater, Kimo stopped at the Lavender Farm, but unfortunately it was closed. He showed me the towns of Makawao and Paia and also where to stop for fresh water right out of a coconut. It was an informative and entertaining tour. Thank you, Kimo.

Vehicle van tour I have done basically consists of a pick up, ride up to the summit, 2 short stops at the crater's rim and the optional lunch stop in Paia. Bear in mind that ride up to the volcano takes around 2 hrs (slightly more from Lahaina) and since the tour is mainly focused on the participants that chose the bike option, you are likely to have an extra stop in the bike shop too (you van and bicycle customers go up together, same van, same group). No time at all to enjoy the volcano, small hike, free time limited to 10 min. Crew very nice and efficient, excellent driver, but to have any fun or really see the craters, go there yourself or pay extra for the bike (and hope the weather will be good!)

We chose the Summit tour during the day forgoing the early start to see the Sunrise. When we left at 7.00am the grey clouds were hanging over Haleakala and we could not see the summit. After a stop in Makawao to fit out the bikers on our tour we started the drive up the mountain. There is lots of beautiful scenery on the way and our guide Kimo kept us informed and entertained. The drive went from lush suburban areas with abundant avocado and mango trees, to emerge above the clouds into a spectacular lunar type landscape. The drive up is windy but two dramamine tablets helped me avoid any travel sickness. The drive is worth the views and the crater is a spectacular sight. So is the surrounding views including the Big Island in the distance. The air was a lot cooler and thinner at the summit but I didnt use the jacket I had packed. After the descent we got to spend some time in Pa’ia. This was one of the reasons I chose this tour. Not having a car on Maui it was a good opportunity to see another part of the island. Kimo took us to Mana market which had the most delicious selection of hot and cold food available for takeaway. We then left at 2pm for the drive back to Lahaina. I would highly recommend this tour. It was organised and delivered what it promised.
