Riding down a volcano is pretty cool.......but the history lesson of Hawaii by the very knowledgeable driver of the transport vehicle was more than worth the money spent.

Waking up at 2 am to check in and get geared up was more than worth it. The guides were knowledgeable, funny, and helpful. The sunrise was insane. The ride down and back to town was a blast. We stopped for pictures, had a delicious breakfast, and went through all types of different climate changes. Loved it. Highly recommended if you have the chance.

The experience itself was wonderful. We were all so glad that we didn't get up early to see the sunrise and then be exhausted the rest of the day. And the bike riding was very cool....and fast. We also really liked the self-guided tour so we could go at our own pace. We stopped in Makawao for lunch at Freshies in their beautiful courtyard on the way back down. So why couldn't I give it a 5? The bus was nice with great A/C but it took 2-1/2 hours to get to Haleakala Summit. When we finally got there, we got to stop for two 10 minutes stops to actually see the crater. We spent far more time on the shuttle in perspective to how much time we were allowed at the crater. Although we checked in for the tour at 8:00 am, we didn't get on the bikes until about 12:15. Our tour guide had told us we could get the bikes back to the shop at 3:30 or 4:00. However, when we arrived at 3:15 to return the bikes, we definitely got the feeling that we were late. One more comment I have is that we were never offered water or a snack. It would have been considerate to offer us a water bottle and a snack after the almost 4 hour bus ride considering we had to ride quite a ways to get to a restaurant. And my final word is that we learned far more about the driver's wife and how they met than anything else! (Trip advisor doesn't allow me to correctly identify our group - we were a family with 2 adult children).
