We didn't want to be up at 2am to do the whole sunrise thing so we opted for the self-guided morning tour. We specifically chose a self-guided tour so that we wouldn't have to wait for anybody that was slower or less comfortable on a bike than we are. The program is great! You meet up at the shop, they orient you to the equipment, get you fitted and then off you go in a nice van. Into the National Park, up to the summit, back down to the bikes and then your off and on your own to get down the mountain and back to the shop. Great plan, not so wonderfully executed. At the shop, we waited 20 minutes for a group that didn't show up. They weren't no-shows (that would be understandable) they called to cancel, but nobody told our guide so we waited and wasted time. Our guide was ok. He was native Hawaiian, but just wasn't able to quickly tell a story or relate a fact. Every time we stopped to do something, we went down the rabbit hole. All in - it took us almost 3 hours to get to the summit of Haleakala from the bike shop! After we're finally on the bikes, things went better. Bikes/equipment were in great shape. They got me a helmet with a gopro mount so that was a plus. I also noticed that even thought this was a self guided tour, our guide stopped to make sure the groups were doing ok - kudos to him for this because there were a few ladies that were not comfortable at all. We took about 90 minutes to get back to the bike shop, that included a few stops for pics and a stop for lunch. If you bombed down the mountain with no stops you could get down in less than an hour. We hurried a bit because we had other things to do that day and it took waaaay longer to get up the mountain than we ever imagined. No problems getting back to the shop or returning the gear. I'd definitely recommend the tour. Biking down a volcano is cool as hell, just make sure you have the time to commit to the activity. It wasn't a half-day thing.

Spectacular sunrise. Informative and friendly guide (Derrick). Took a wrong turn on way down but iPhone rerouted is, so no worries.

Liked the ride, hated the motorcycle helmets and no mirrors on helmet or bike. Loved the tour guide info and bicycles were well maintained. They made sure we knew the way back.
