The tour was well organized, sharply on schedule, and moved like a well-oiled machine. The bikes and included equipment were quality, and the bus itself was comfortable and driven like a pro by Trevor. The ride up blinked past specifically because of the exceptional knowledge, humor, and humbling generosity of our tour guide, Bill, who journeyed well beyond the typical summative tales of Hawaii’s history to provide a fascinating interwoven narrative of geology, ecology, astronomy, history, culture and current events unlike anything I’ve experienced on any tour ever. I’m admittedly not usually a fan of tours, because the canned knowledge and feeling of being a canned fish in a bus don’t appeal to me, but I can’t recommend this specific tour highly enough. Bill is a treasure of scientific knowledge expertly mixed with anecdotal stories and his passion for his work, people and the planet we share was well worth the price of admission alone. His extra tips and tricks for getting the best Haleakala sunrise photograph worked perfectly, and his recommendation for great breakfast on the ride down without the crowds was on point! The self-guided ride down was great, lots of fun and felt like a real adventure, even though we had detailed directions and were never in any danger of getting lost. We did a lot of fun stuff on Maui, but this was surprisingly the best thing we did, owing 1000% to the crew who put it together and made it awesome! Thanks all, and Mahalo!

Bikes and tour guides were great. Friendly and informative and entertaining on the way up, and they really make sure you know the way back so you don’t get lost after they turn you loose. Only thing that wasn’t great was the huge crowd at the summit. I know that they started a reservation system for the summit at sunrise, I assume to control the size of the crowd. But I think they let too many people in. It was hard to find a spot to watch the sunrise and have a view into the crater, which was frustrating. They need to reduce by about 1/3 how many people they let in each morning IMO.
