Haleakala Unguided

Overview
This tour is for those who want to bike down by themselves at their own pace. The bike route is exactly the same as our Cycle to the Sea tour. It runs from 8 am to about 11:30 am. We take you up to an elevation of 6700' above sea level, give you instructions, then equip you with awesome Trek Hybrids and BIKING helmets...not full face motorcycle helmets. We leapfrog ahead you every 7 miles and wait for you, in case you want something to eat or drink, bike adjustment, or to take some pictures. We do this all the way down, so we are always close by. We are the only company that offers this service.

A week ago, we had the pleasure of taking the self-guided Mt. Haleakala tour through Maui Bombers. It was a wonderful experience for all of us. Our ages ranged from 13 to 82. Matt has figured out the sweet spot to descend down Haleakala so you are not competing for road space with the other bike companies. Also, traffic was light by the time we came down. Matt’s Trek bikes are excellent and we very much appreciated wearing bike helmets. Matt really has taken all the good things he learned working 5 years for the big guys and has incorporated all the changes he wanted to see happen that make for a better customer experience. All 3 of us felt Matt thought personally about each of us on our trip. Plus, like others have written about, his banana muffins are delish! Finally, one other completely unexpected bonus was that Matt took pictures and videos of us along the way. We had no idea. At the end of our trip, he air dropped them into my iphone…no charge! When’s the last time that sort of thing happened to you? I can’t recommend Maui Bombers highly enough. We intend to try his ā€œCycle to the Windmillsā€ tour next time we are in Maui. Mahalo Matt for the great time and memories you helped us create.

Matt was awesome! Friendly, and knowledgeable about the area. I was picked up at my hotel in Wailea. It is not a crowded or a (underwhelming) sunrise tour, so if that is necessary for your Maui experience go with a different company. That being said: I did not want to get up super early anyway. Enjoyed the smooth Trek bikes. The helmets were awesome because I could hear cars coming up behind me and not sure I would have with the type of helmets other companies use. Matt was there to guide me from stop to stop. It is a mostly downhill ride. Like, 97%. There are a few places to pedal, and not really being in shape, I was fine. There are some cute towns towards the end of the ride too. The scenery is spectacular, and riding through the different climate zones kept a constant smile on my face. Enjoyed riding through Eucalyptus trees, smelling tropical flowers, and the lush area at a comfortable pace. I would recommend Maui bombers over and over again. Bring a jacket, sunscreen, sensible clothes and shoes!

This is a touristy ride, but if you want to do something like this, this is the one to do. Might be the only tour that has good bikes (Trek). You also get to wear actual bike helments. Most of other tours use the giant cruisers (not great for getting up the occassional incline) and motorcycle helmets (?). The ride itself is more of a "coast". All downhill, but if you want a good view and chance to see the Haleakala road upclose, this is worth doing.
