Abyssinian Baptist Church

(Exterior Visit) Founded in 1808, Abyssinian Baptist Church is one of the oldest African-American Baptist churches in the United States.

Apollo Theater

(Exterior Visit) Re-opened to both black and white audiences in 1934 as the Apollo Theater catering mostly to Harlem’s black community.

Despite the rain, we had a very interesting and enjoyable tour with Tauren, learning a lot about a culture that was alien to us. Tauren entertained with her knowledge, singing and enthusiasm, thoroughly recommended.

We learned about the beginnings of gospel music and Harlem. We felt totally safe, for those worried about the area. We attended 30 min of the service, we had another commitment, and enjoyed that. We were a little surprised to see a donation bowl passed around to tour attendees but whatever. Many people donated. I guess that's the price the tours pay for letting 50 strangers in. Guide really pushed to shop and dine locally.

The tour could have been a washout but the rain gave away. Interesting insight into Harlem and its culture and history with stops at churches, Apollo theatre, murals etc and a v interesting gospel service. Most tours only operate on a Sunday and this one was on a Saturday at a different church
