Rafting
On a whim, we decided to book a rafting trip in mid May 2022. We quickly researched several rafting companies and decided on Royal Gorge Rafting based on their reviews and also the location. We had never seen the Royal Gorge, despite having lived in Colorado and now back frequently to visit. We booked 24 hours in advance and showed up the next morning at 8am. We were met with a well organized, punctual, professional, and quaint operation. Every single staff member we interacted with was so friendly and helpful. Dealing with people and especially tourists, I’m sure can be challenging, but the staff clearly enjoy their jobs and made us feel so welcome.
We did the Royal Gorge half day in mid May, and the rapids were running at a class II-IV. We were told that in June, the Arkansas river level will rise from the 1600 CSF it was currently at, to around 3000 CSF, making the rapids even faster and more challenging. The water level was perfect, covering some of the rockier sections making them less technical and providing enough flow to really have some real fun. The water temperature was around 70°. Some people opted for a wetsuit, we did not and only wore the splash jacket. I was unsure of that decision, but it ended up we didn’t need the wetsuit at all. The water felt great. I would, however, recommend the neoprene shoes as they were easier to lodge into the boat and secure yourself vs tennis shoes. You WILL get wet, so wear quick drying clothes.
This is not for the faint of heart. You will be working during this experience, using your core, back, hips, and arms to paddle and stay in the boat. Don’t let this deter you. Riding those beautiful, cool rapids surrounded by the rock canyon walls, rafting under the bridge….it was exhilarating and awe inspiring, to say the least. Our Guide, Blake, was knowledgeable, professional, excellent communicator, and hilarious. We felt very safe with Blake guiding us through this new and challenging experience. He provided us with local history, history of the river, and kept us laughing the entire time. What an office he has!
We would 100% recommend Royal Gorge Rafting, and we will definitely be back in the future to raft different runs. For context, I have rafted once before and my husband had never rafted. I would also recommend you know how to swim (although you ARE wearing safety gear, given extensive but clear instructions, and have support kayaks along side) Although we did not fall out, there were “swimmers” from other boats that were quickly and safely retrieved🤣 I secretly wanted to fall out so I could sign the bus wall.
All the guides were wonderful, but we of course recommend requesting Blake!
