Half Day Snorkel Trip on Reefs in the Florida Keys

Overview
Come join us snorkeling some of the most beautiful reefs within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and Pennekamp State Park. We have many possible reefs to explore: Molasses, Elbow, French Reef and the famous Christ of the Abyss on Dry Rocks. These protected areas offer an opportunity to see turtles, spotted eagle rays, moray eels and a variety of different fish. These special reefs are part of the 3rd largest living reef system in the world and the ONLY living coral reef in the US. We stop at two different locations on the reef. Each stop is determined by the captain based on the day's conditions. We cannot guarantee any specific site.

In an effort to reduce the amount of single-use plastic that ends up in our oceans, we recommend bringing a reusable water bottle. We have water coolers in our shop and on our boats for your convenience!

Very organized and fun trip. Things to consider: Parking can be tight so get there early. Standing in line in their store to register is very crowded so bring a mask (no pun intended) if you are still concerned about Covid. Captain John and Culver run a tight ship. Be prepared to obey their orders and save the chit-chat for after they get everyone seated and safe. And be sure to tip them at the end! They do have a bathroom on the boat but go around the corner onshore in the restrooms first. They provide water but it is pointed paper cups and a big cooler, not water bottles. We have snorkeled at the Christ Statue before on John Pennekamp trips but this one was much better and no other boats were around for some reason. The captains watch you like well-trained lifeguards and they help you as you get on and off the boat. Our second visit that same day was to Horseshoe Reef which we had never seen before. Great Elkhorn coral and we saw a shark far away. (It was not interested in us at all.) If you are used to cove-type settings (like the Virgin Islands) this is open ocean snorkeling so definitely check the weather for less windy days. We loved the snorkeling but I am sorry to say, my friends, that we have been coming to this area for years and the health of the coral is not improving but getting worse. Right before we got onto the boat, three scuba divers floated by us, investigating the Elkhorn coral and taking notes on underwater clipboards. It was like watching a National Geographic special with them so close. I hope that their research helps to make a difference in saving the coral reefs.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a detailed review. We're glad you had a great time and felt safe with our crew. We do our best to make sure everyone has a good time, while staying safe and also protecting our beautiful coral reef. Hopefully with increased vigilance from everyone on the island, we can protect our reef for future generations.

Before going out, you'd be wise to have a serious conversation with the dive operator about conditions. We were caught unaware when delivered to an alternative dive site with poor conditions. Had we probed more before leaving, I'm sure they'd given us the full story. So, you'll need to take the initiative on this conversation and make your own decision as to the experience to which you're about to travel. Caveat emptor.
