For a relatively new company these guys crush it! A young, energetic, and knowledgeable crew with a marine biologist that was very knowledgeable and genuinely excited to be out there. If people got sick the deck hand and biologist were extremely helpful. The smaller boat made for a more intimate experience where you could ask questions / interact with the crew as opposed to those huge whale watching boats where you are just a number. On top of that our captain was brilliant in spotting a blue whale in the distance, and tracking it as it dove for 12+ minutes to near perfection. You can tell they may be new to the game, but they are the company to beat out there!

We went as a family of 5 with Discovery Whale watch. They are based in a good location on the main wharf. Their booking process was easy and the service from the people on land was excellent. We feared we would be late after we were caught in traffic arriving from SF, but they were very pleasant and flexible about it. The naturalists on board were very knowledgable and personable and really made an effort to talk to everyone on the boat. We were surrounded by humpback whales in a feeding frenzy, which was fabulous to witness. There was plenty of space and therefore plenty of visability on the boat for the number of passengers. It was a relatively small boat which we appreciated. Travel sickness tablets were available, as were free hot drinks while at sea. All in all, a very memorable and special experience.

Be careful of booking your whale-watching with ā€˜Discoveryā€™. You should definitely go whale watching in Monterey Bay - humpback whales practically perform ballet around the boat, year-round, not to mention the other fantastic marine mammals we saw. But if you decide to go with Discovery, you should hope you donā€™t get the ā€˜marine naturalistā€™ we had on the morning of Aug 21st. He began by assuring us he wouldnā€™t stay in the cabin avoiding questions, and then that is exactly what he did. When I approached the cabin to get more information on a sighting (he neglected to mention where we were to look), he gave me a grudging answer and the shut the cabin door on my hand. After realizing what he had done, and once I had a chance to get my hand out, he slammed and locked the door without a word. A serious let-down to an otherwise fantastic experience. I would strongly advise people to go with one of the many other firms instead.
