We booked a 3 hour tour aboard the Princess Atlantis boat. It appears to be the biggest boat among all the tour groups. The staff was very friendly and the onboard naturalist was very professional and knowledgeable. If you are prone to seasickness plan accordingly. The boat has a flat bottom and thus it is a very rocky ride. We paid the extra cash for the upper deck. Not sure I would do that again. They close off the front of the boat on the upper deck, and I still found myself on the lower deck much of the time. Upper deck give you first boarding privileges and access to the best seat, kinda like Southwest Airlines. We got very close to many whales and saw some spectacular launch feeds from many. It was a great time and I would say a must do if you come to Monterey.

Signed up online after reading they are a small and independent operator, with a small boat (I dislike large crowds). On the day itself, I was assigned to the boat Sur Randy, and had Isiah and Daniel as our crew. I felt very safe at all times, and the crew was incredibly knowledgable. They were also friendly and explained what we saw very well to us. We were first to spot a feeding frenzy of at least a dozen humpback whales, which we were able to watch for over an hour before the crew decided to break off to look for other whales. On our way back, after what appeared to be a futile search for other whales (we did see another 3 humpback whales and another smaller feeding frenzy), the crew spotted a 'suspicious blow'. We waited for the whales to resurface not once, but twice, and the crew manage to get us a really close look at a couple of blue whales. I couldn't have asked for more, it was awesome!
