The last 3 times I’ve come to New York with different family members & friends, I have taken them to do this tour. Neal Shoemaker, being a passionate local born & bred here, does a great job of bringing Harlem to life. We started the tour with a visit to Canaan Baptist Church and enjoyed the 1st part of their service with the sounds of wonderful gospel choir. It was a very moving experience. This was followed by a walking tour of beautiful Harlem, with Neal playing Jazz on his iPad, it really sets the scene, as he points out places of interest and shares the history of this place & the changes it has gone through. We visited a Jazz bar, in full swing playing great music and visited the iconic Apollo theatre. I can highly recommend this tour, it is fun and very interesting. Thank you Neal for a another very enjoyable experience.

A few years ago, I took the "Harlem Jazz Tour" with Neal, of Harlem Heritage Tours. Recently, I participated in a different tour with Harlem Heritage, the "Harlem Gospel Tour". This time, Neal was joined by Toni as tour guide for the group. The two tours complimented one another, and both were excellent. Both guides were knowledgeable, good communicators, and delightful companions. They engaged participants of all ages with their stories and in sharing our surroundings. During our time together, we visited a church service where we heard gospel music, and we also walked to historic locations where gospel and jazz music was performed and made famous. As we walked, Neal pointed out changes that are currently happening in the Harlem community. Both guides were approachable and willing to answer our questions. I highly recommend this tours for those who want a deeper understanding of New York City, American History, and the African American contribution to the culture of the world.

We had a wonderful time with Neil and Toni on our 2.5 hour Harlem Gospel Walking Tour. Toni met us at the starting point and we spent a few minutes introducing ourselves to our fellow tour participants. This allowed us to have great interactions with others in our group. Our first destination was church. Having been to African American churches before, I found this to be a good example of gospel church. We stayed at church long enough to hear some gospel music and get the feel of the church but not so long as to shorten our walk around Harlem. Neil joined us at the church and we enjoyed a very informative tour of the area. Both Neil and Toni were happy to answer any questions we had; making the tour very interactive. I felt I had a useful working knowledge of Harlem and it’s history. The buildings and wide streets were a contrast for other areas of NYC. One of my companions asked to see the location of a famous 1950’a picture of many jazz artists and Neil and Toni were willing to walk us to the location after the tour. Very generous of them. They also suggested a delicious restaurant for lunch that featured fantastic live jazz. The name of the restaurant was the Red Rooster. All in all, we were quit thrilled with our Sunday morning and lunch in Harlem. We would definitely schedule another tour offered by Neil at heritagetours.com.
