On this tour you will visit one of Harlem’s most historic churches consisting of outstanding soul stirring gospel music and the power of prayer. After the church service, you will embark on a cultural walking tour conducted by a lifelong born and raised Harlem resident equipped with portable video, sound and pictures presented along the way at sights of cultural significance. The media component will heighten your enjoyment and understanding of Harlem history.

What To Expect

Apollo Theater

We end this tour at the Apollo Theater, we are able to visit lobby area but not for entrance into main theater. Tour guide will tell great stories pertaining to the Apollo.

Harlem

After leaving Harlem Heritage Tourism and Cultural Center we will visit historic Harlem church fir one hour. The power of pray and beautiful music will leave you enchanted and inspired. After gospel church service we will engage in 2 hour cultural walking tour covering 400 years of Harlem history with special emphasis on 20th century Harlem. Along the way see beautiful architecture, historic music / jazz clubs, civil rights movement sites, theaters and many historic churches of various denominations.

Neal was really engaging, and gave us a great tour of Harlem, walking past the former sites of the Cotton Club and Savoy. He played music for the 1920's era while we walked the neighborhood and brought a lot of energy to the tour. The church experience was great, the gospel singers were top class and the sermon was interesting. There is a dress code at the church which the ushers policed but I felt this was very reasonable. Thanks again Neal!

Neil is a very enthusiastic guy who is very knowledgeable and passionate about Harlem. I’m hoping he remembers to check out Muhammad Ali’s visit to our hometown of South Shields where he had his wedding blessed.

This was a very special experience for 3 of us today and the inimitable Neal taught us amazing history of Harlem while walking us through the streets of US history. Church service at Canaan Baptist Church touched our hearts while strengthening our souls in the very place Rev Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela visited. Standing amidst the gorgeous snow covered trees in the former “projects” was an eye opener and Neal’s stories of growing up right there are amazing. A visit to The Apollo was a dream come true and learning about the man who created the “Black Is Beautiful” on the very street named after him was all unforgettable. Neal is a gift indeed and a man who knows his Beloved Harlem so take his tour and you too will smile all day!
