I have always been fascinated when in New York by the strangeness of the clothes and the ringlets of the hasidic men, so I booked the tour with my mam as a way of learning some more about this sector of the Jewish community. I read the book Unorthodox and found it compelling. Our tour guide was Frieda (she too left the orthodox community) and she lead us through a brief history of the origins of the community and then told us of how the community lived today including the restrictions on the use of the internet. The community only live a stones throw from Manhattan but it is like stepping back 200 years. Frieda imparted her wonderful knowledge and this was not like spending time in a make believe world, this is a real world, thriving and flourishing. It was a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon and I would highly recommend booking the tour.

I went on this tour with my parents and wife. This was the best possible way we could have learned about the Hasidic community of South Williamsburg. Frieda grew up in this culture and has since left, and therefore provided us such fascinating and objective insight that only someone with her background could. Since she lived it, she answered every question with ease and honesty. It was a great blend of facts about the community mixed with stories from her personal experience. As a reform Jew myself, it was fascinating seeing the vast differences between the version of Judaism I practice versus the version practiced by the Hasidic community. But this tour is worthwhile for folks of any faith. The tour also included a couple food stops (included in the price), which was more of a bonus than anything... the tour would have been great even without those. We were scheduled for 90 minutes, but on this particular day, we spent well over 2 hours, and I certainly have no complaints about that. I would highly recommend this for anyone who is interested in learning about a pocket of NYC unseen by many.

Frieda was an unforgettable tour guide. She explained everything in a way so that we as a group could understand an otherwise foreign world to us. Her experience and respect for the Hasidic culture makes the authenticity of her words that much more valuable. She answered all of our questions with great sincerity. I would recommend this tour to anyone who wants to explore a new part of New York City, provided they choose Frieda as the tour guide.
