We did the Kirkwood (all day) jet boat trip on the 4th of July. What a fantastic way to enjoy our beautiful country on this holiday. We saw a bear, big horn sheep, rapids, and tall canyon walls. The trip was well orchestrated with 2 stops on the excursion, including a very nice picnic lunch. I must admit that my favorite part of this experience was staying at the Hell's Canyon Adventure Lodge, run by the excursion company. This is the closest "indoor" place to the stay to the Hells Canyon Dam where the jet boat departs, We were warned when we made reservations that it is remote with very limited eating facilities and to follow the written instructions, not a GPS. We stopped in Baker City before heading in and loaded up with deli sandwiches, a cheese tray, soda, and ice (and had several bottles of Pinot Noir from a wine tour. The lodge does look like a quonset hut, but was very clean and comfortable inside. Although there were only two of us, our room could have easily slept 6. The other couple who stayed in the other room the first night said they had 4 beds for the 2 of them. Breakfast (included with the room) in the morning was scrambled eggs, pancakes, fresh fruit, yogurt, coffee, juice -- really good. It was amazing to watch the sun set over the canyon walls from the bench in front of the lodge looking out over the Snake River (with wine and cheese) and taking in this amazing scenery and solitude. This is a wonderful location to experience our beautiful country.
