Hermann-Grima Historic House Guided Tour Ticket

Overview
This restored French Quarter home built in 1831, includes a Federalist architectural façade, original operating open-hearth kitchen, urban slave quarters, and expansive courtyard. The Urban Enslavement Tour at Hermann-Grima House, looks at the experiences of those who were enslaved in an urban setting, how that differed from those enslaved in rural settings, and how the contributions of people of African descent have shaped New Orleans. Condé Nast Traveler voted it one of the best tours in New Orleans and the only tour listed from a museum. We believe that nothing tells a story like a home. In addition, the property’s 19th-century carriage house is home to the The Exchange Shop, originally founded in the 1881 by The Woman’s Exchange and one of the oldest women-led non-profits in the South.

We recently did the Urban Enslavement tour with Peter as as our guide. Even though we originally toured the Hermann-Grima house several years ago, I am so glad we did it again, because this tour provided a unique and totally different perspective. Tour participants were provided an in-depth look at the lives of the enslaved who were behind the scenes of the house and how their labor ensured that the property ran smoothly. It was also fascinating to hear the differences between the lives of the urban enslaved in New Orleans and the lives of those enslaved in rural LA. Peter is hands-down perhaps the best historical property guide we have encountered (we have now had him twice) and makes you feel like you are in the 19th century with his intricate knowledge of the times and of the artifacts on display. Don't miss this tour!

I loved everything about this tour! Our guide Lynette wove in history of the house, the families that owned it and New Orleans as well.. She was a superb storyteller with lots of energy. The courtyard was a tranquil setting away from the noise of nearby Bourbon street.
