Being from the "flat lands" of Northwest Ohio and having little experiencing hiking, me, my husband, and college age kids (boy and girl) decided to do a "shorter" guided hike (four miles roundtrip). We met up with our guide, Blue, from A Walk In The Woods, and another family at the Nantahala Outdoor Center at the south end of Gatlinburg where we signed waivers and shared introductions after which we caravaned about five or ten minutes into the park to the trailhead. DO take plenty of water as you will need it. This hike is mostly through an old growth forest, and you have to watch your footing as their are many tree roots and rocks along the trail. Blue is very knowledgeable about the area and most of the plants. If we saw something he could not identify, we took a picture of it so he could look it up afterward. He also explained what to do if we saw a bear and put our fears to rest for the most part. The two mile hike to the waterfall is a good workout, but Blue was constantly checking on everyone and making sure we took water breaks regularly. We spent 20-30 minutes at the waterfall where Blue was prepared with snacks of trail mix and peanut butter crackers for everyone. It was very interesting hearing about his upbringing and experiences in the outdoors, and he was very eager to answer as many questions as we could throw at him. The two mile trip back was a lot of uphilll and was a bit more strenuous, especially for my daughter who has a little trouble with her knee and my husband who was very much out of breath. That said, Blue asked up front if anyone had any physical concerns he should know about, and was intentional throughout the trip to make sure everyone was doing alright and asked who needed what. We felt very safe and taken care of the entire time. Blue was a terrific guide, and I would highly recommend AWITW/Blue if you want a real Smoky Mountain experience and want to know more about the area.
