Highlights of Charleston Guided Walking Tour

Overview
Our two hour Highlights of Charleston walking tour guides guests through the historic French Quarter and South of Broad neighborhoods of downtown Charleston. Along the way, your guide will describe the long history, unique culture, architecture, and geography of Charleston and the greater lowcountry area, painting a detailed picture of how Charleston's tumultuous past formed the city now beloved by travelers the world over. You'll view some of the city's oldest houses of worship, burial sites, theaters, the forts of Charleston harbor, and the antebellum mansions that look out across the waters of the Cooper and Ashley rivers, among many other historic and picturesque sites. If you want someone who is knowledgeable to guide you around the city while explaining the history of Charleston in an interesting and informative way, then BOOK THIS TOUR! If you want someone to just help you navigate around the city to take photos and to tell you when a building was built and other basic facts, book a different tour. Bill is incredibly knowledgeable about a wide range of subjects that relate to Charleston. And his relaxed way of explaining things actually means that you absorb and remember many of the facts he is sharing with you. He was open to answering questions and stunned us a few times with the depth of his knowledge. He would answer a question, and then throw in some obscure interesting facts about the subject. He is like an old eccentric professor trapped in a younger man's body. He does have a very strong point of view on a number of things, but is also open to discussion and debate. He also does not sugarcoat the topic of slavery, gloss over it or avoid it. He discussed it in detail as it is something he is passionate about. We found some guides barely mentioned or discussed it in some of the historical houses we visited For example, a different guide answering a question: Yes, they did have 17 slaves working in this house, but take a look at this beautiful authentic chair from the period) He was able to answer many questions on the subject and gave us more information than we expected. Of all the walking tours I have done around the world, this was probably one of the best. I learnt many things. And I still remember them almost two weeks later!

Trip Advisor recommendations never disappoint! Palmer was our fabulous tour guide for our Sunday walking tour of Charleston. Her knowledgeable and easy-going style let us experience the city on our first day with tons of interesting history seem through a nativeā€™s eyes. Highly recommend this (even over a carriage ride) because we felt it was a more personal experience.

If you're looking to avoid tours that hit on every rumor/gimmick and instead focus on how social, economic, climate and political circumstances caused Charleston to develop into the city you see pre war between the states, then this is the tour for you. Guides are well learned and frank. Definitely a tour worth taking.
