Highlights of Charleston Guided Walking Tour

Overview
Our two hour Highlights of Charleston walking tour guides guests through the historic French Quarter and South of Broad neighborhoods of downtown Charleston. Along the way, your guide will describe the long history, unique culture, architecture, and geography of Charleston and the greater lowcountry area, painting a detailed picture of how Charleston's tumultuous past formed the city now beloved by travelers the world over. You'll view some of the city's oldest houses of worship, burial sites, theaters, the forts of Charleston harbor, and the antebellum mansions that look out across the waters of the Cooper and Ashley rivers, among many other historic and picturesque sites. Our guides also offer their expert advice on other activities, restaurants, and bars for guests to explore once they've finished their tour.

This was not some big, generic tour company rattling off some canned factoids. Bill, our tour guide and owner of the company, was passionate, irreverent, knowledgeable and engaging. The tour was a great introduction to Charleston presented honestly by a guide who clearly loves the city without sugar-coating its history.

We learned a lot about history of Charleston. Palmer gave a terrific energetic tour and tailored some of it to interests and questions of the group. The weather was very warm--bring hat and plenty of water and maybe even a fan, but do check it out!

Took this walking tour on a hot Saturday afternoon. The group was small and Bill was our tour guide. We arrived just on time and had not had lunch yet, but Bill allowed us to go and quickly buy something in a nearby cafĆ©. The tour takes you around the most important places of Charleston, and is very much focused on the history of Charleston. Bill himself is very knowledgeable, bringing the history of Charleston in a narrative and well-constructed way, which is something not all tour guides are capable of. He even added some subtle humour and sarcasm as well. Concerning the importance of slavery, he has a very clear point of view, which he continuously tried to transfer to us. It was extreme at times, but not bothering, and I understand his frustration. In any way itā€™s good for a historian to question things and not take them for granted. At times, when he is really into his own story, he starts talking very quickly, which sometimes made it a bit harder to understand everything he said as a non-native. The only real bothering point of criticism was that there was left no time to take some photos; even if you only wanted to take one picture of a building for instance, you were already behind as the group moved on immediately after an explanation. Despite the few remarks, I highly recommend this tour to explore Charleston and learn a lot about its history.
