What To Expect
1
Banyan Drive
Our first path drives us down Banyan Drive known as the "Hilo Walk of Fame" for the banyan trees planted by celebrities, such as Babe Ruth and Franklin Roosevelt and many others. These trees have withstood several tsunamis that have devastated the town of Hilo
2
Liliuokalani Gardens
This is the largest Japanese garden outside of Japan donated by Queen LiliŹ»uokalani in 1917. Throughout the gardens are stone lanterns, gazebos, and torii gates, recalling the Japanese immigrants who came to Hawaii.
3
Rainbow Falls
breathtaking 80 ft waterfall, Rainbow Falls. These beautiful falls get their name from the rainbow that is often visible in the mist that rises as the water cascades to the rocks 80 feet below.
4
Big Island Candies
Big Island Candies was established in 1977 to manufacture and market fine quality macadamia nut candies and cookies using 100 percent Hawaii-grown macadamia nuts and Kona coffee, island eggs, real butter, and high-grade chocolate. Since its founding, Big Island Candies has continuously introduced new and imaginative products that "wow" both the eyes and taste buds of its growing legion of fans.
5
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
We will then make our way to the summit of Kilauea volcano at the Volcanoes National Park, the most highly regarded and revered volcanic area on Earth. The Park highlights two of the world's most active volcanoes--Kilauea and Mauna Loa--and offers insights on the birth of the Hawaiian Islands and views of dramatic volcanic landscapes. At the park, you will stop at the Visitor Center, witness the spectacular collapsed caldera, steam vents, sulfur banks, and fascinating scenic lookouts. No trip to Hawaii is complete without a trip to Volcanoes National Park.
6
Nahuku - Thurston Lava Tube
We will walk through a lava tube and the guide will share information with you on how it was formed by lava. This lava tube is .4 of a mile loop trail with low lighting. Gradual stairs descending into the tube ascending stairs coming out. Not all passengers may be physically fit in which they may stay in the vehicle or outside natural scenery for this portion of the tour.
7
Richardson Beach Park
Richardson Black Sand Beach, where sea turtles are usually spotted. The Black Sand Beach is a local favorite, and is a great way to see how the ocean and volcanoes make fine black sand.

Edmond did a great job keeping us on schedule and entertained - the ship had a short day in port. The tour includes Rainbow Falls, Some Hilo sights, the Macadamia farm/factory, an orchid farm, and Volcano National Park. Because of the government shutdown and the recent eruptions, a lot of the national park was closed - but we did get to see what was open, including the steam vents and the main crater, and that was the highlight of the tour. Rainbow Falls was meh, and crowded. We wanted macadamia nuts so the trip to the farm was perfect, and the nuts were cheaper there than other places. I'm not an orchid person, but the people on the tour who were appreciated that stop. If you want an overall tour, this is a good way to do it. If I had a do-over, and more was open there, I might opt for a volcanos only tour.

This was my son's choice for a tour in Hilo, and it started off a bit rocky. All of the guests were from our cruise, and there seemed to be some confusion as to whom we should follow. Do we follow Edmond? Is he our guide? On the bus, it was clear he was our guide. I'll be the first to say he was very informative and knew a lot about Hilo. The bus had a great air conditioner, and we were actually ahead of time returning to our ship. That being said, the entire tour felt rushed. We paid a price to get back on time - at the first stop, two guests thought Edmond was leaving without them. I'm not sure if he was just moving the bus, but it certainly scared us all into thinking he would have left witout us! There are some disappointing things that are beyond the tour's reach. For example, it's not their fault that the lava tunnels are still closed or that there isn't much to look at in Volcanoes National Park. Thankfully, the government shut down may have limited the number of rangers at the park, but Edmond certainly knew just about everything. Like I said, he was very knowledgeable. I really wish the tour could be reconfigured a bit. For our group, we would have much rather we skip the orchid "garden" (which was more of an orchid shop) and spend more at the Asian gardens (where we spent 10 minutes) or the black sand beach (we only had 15-20 minutes). Plus leaving 20-30 minutes for lunch at a popular stop was really tough! Do I think this is a terrible tour and shouldn't be taken? Not at all! If a bus tour is your preferred excursion, you will love it (just be back on time!). Our family, which included a preteen and teen, were just a little underwhelmed by it all. We thought we would have a little more time at the stops, but such is life.

He took us to every place specified on the schedule and a bonus stop. He was sooo knowledgeable and polite which made the trip extra fun.The picture advertised however has nothing to do with the trip. It is not in your Tourguides control whatā€™s open and what is not but Paul made sure we got to see as much as possible. The only con we have was do not mix people from a Cruise ship with people who stay on the big island. All they did was complain and worry they do not make it back in time to the cruise ship and want to rush around.
