We went on the 4pm trawl in July. It was hot, although once out on the estuary there was a breeze. The waves were 2-4 feet, so there was some rocking. No one got sick. We trawled for 50 minutes, which could have been boring, but the mate (Lauren) kept us entertained with her explanations of shrimping and her stories about life in Hilton Head. Her hurricane stories were pretty amazing. She didn't have a scientific presentation on sea life prepared. This was a practical introduction to shrimping, although on a small scale due to us tourists.
When they hauled in the catch, we got to help sort them. The kids were able to touch most of the fish if they dared. Some of us helped to behead and devein the shrimp. We went home with about 20 shrimp, which we ate for an appetizer. They were delicious.
After the tour, you will know why local shrimp is so expensive. Lots of time and effort for an uncertain result. It was a good cruise. Not very comfortable, not tightly scripted, but something we wont forget. The crew was friendly and helpful. The boat is squat, slow and ugly, because it is made for shrimping, not cruising. I recommend this tour. At $39.99 per person, it was a good deal.
