What To Expect

Black Hills National Forest

Once the balloon is ready, you’ll gently take to the skies for an approximate 1-hour flight over the Black Hills National Forest. If you are new to ballooning, you’ll be surprised at the silence and serenity you’ll find high above the treetops. It’s truly magical. Upon landing, the ground crew will pack the balloon while you and your pilot celebrate the flight with complimentary champagne, light snacks and a story about the origin of hot air ballooning. Flights depart at sunrise and are weather dependent and always at the discretion of your experienced pilot.

My wife and I had our first balloon ride with this company and had a great time. The ride was great, the scenery was beautiful and the pilot and crew were great. If you are in the Black Hills you have to try to book a ride with these guys. You will not regret it!

Booking the flight was easy, communication from the company was as simple as an email to let me know the flight was still on. Once we arrived in the morning we were met with a hello from Damien, and we took off. This flight was a bucket list item, and my wife and daughter absolutely loved the experience. The weather was great, the views were spectacular, and the pilot was great. The crew was hard working, and they were all very friendly and seemed quite happy to be assisting in all facets. After the flight landed, a wonderful toast was had with mimosas, muffins, cheese and crackers. It was great to learn a little history about ballooning, and I would recommend this experience to anyone. At the end of our South Dakota trip, I asked my six year-old daughter what her favorite part of the trip was and it was the hot air balloon ride. I can see why Damien and Keely love what they do. They share that joy and passion with their customers. If I could leave one recommendation for Black Hills Balloons, I would ask them to add to their site that when booking you will most likely be flying with other passengers not in your party. This certainly makes sense to me and it was great to meet new people, but I'm sure others may not be aware. My family will certainly be flying with Black Hills Balloons again and I will recommend them to my other family who frequent the Black Hills annually.

I booked this ride for our 40th wedding anniversary as a surprise for my husband. What were blessed with a beautiful morning and didn’t mind the early hour at all for that reason! The owners/pilots were thoughtful of Covid considerations. They explained the process for flying and we enjoyed the humor they interjected into it! I really appreciated their constant monitoring of a cloud passing north to insure our safety. The flight was simply beautiful over the pines, wildlife, fields, and we even caught a glimpse of crazy horse in the distance. The entire staff was simply the best. Landing was smooth and the champagne toast/crackers and cheese/muffins each in our own dishes not passed among us was wonderful in the early morning in a pasture. There is nothing we didn’t like! Thank you Damien, Keeley, and crew!
