What To Expect

Black Hills National Forest

Once the balloon is ready, you’ll gently take to the skies for an approximate 1-hour flight over the Black Hills National Forest. If you are new to ballooning, you’ll be surprised at the silence and serenity you’ll find high above the treetops. It’s truly magical. Upon landing, the ground crew will pack the balloon while you and your pilot celebrate the flight with complimentary champagne, light snacks and a story about the origin of hot air ballooning. Flights depart at sunrise and are weather dependent and always at the discretion of your experienced pilot.

For a full refund, cancel at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure time.

The balloon ride was worth every dollar we paid. An experience like none other. We were in the Hills for a family reunion and stayed at Rafter J Bar Ranch Campground, which was only 11 miles from the pickup point for the balloon ride. The Rafter J is also a great place to camp.

Our experience started at a gathering place where we left our cars. The Black Hills Balloon staff transported us to our launching area. We got to enjoy the total experience from unloading the balloon/basket to launching our flight. Our pilot, Walter, is a seasoned hot air balloon pilot and he made the flight extraordinary! We were in the sky for a little over an hour. After touchdown, Walter gave us a little history of the sport and we had a champagne toast along with some nice cheese and crackers and little pastries. The chase grouped loaded us up and drove back to our cars. We gathered at 5:20 am and were back to our cars around 8:45.

A hot air balloon ride was on our bucket list, and this was a total blast. We had a great day for flying and our pilot Damian was an awesome host. We saw deer, antelope, buffalo and elk on our flight. We flew over Custer State park and saw a beautiful sunrise and miles of the hills. Would definitely do it again and recommend to anyone who is an adventurist. We had never flown in a hot air balloon and didn't know what to anticipate, for anyone nervous about trying it, both my husband and I felt safe and thoroughly enjoyed the ride. The landing was more than my expectations!
