When people come from elsewhere, we always try to schedule a run on the Hudson River with the Rip Van Winkle folks. The boat is minimally comfortable and the food and drinks are undistinguished, but nobody is there for the food or drinks or comfy chairs. They come for the river, and on the river the scenery is always spectacular. The crew are friendly and attentive, and I always learn something new from the narration. (Do try to remember that it will be chilllier on the boat, of course, so bring an extra layer of clothing, especially in Spring and Fall.)

A nice diversion from going to all of the mansions along the Hudson River. You get to see a completely differnt view from the water than you do from the grand sloping lawns of the mansions. The light houses were very scenic and we went during the change in fall colors so the shores and trees were glorious. Only $20 for a 2 hour cruise and you can sit outside in the wind or down inside with a snack bar where you can get wine and beer as well fast food kinds of repast. It was very relaxing just to sit and watch the water slide by and envision what this waterway might have looked like 150 years ago, full of sailing ships and barges carrying produce and goods up and down the Hudson or supplying Washington's revolutionary war troops at Newberg. The little port area has a few shops and restaurants, but there is not much here except the Mariners restaurant and the cruise. Very relaxing area.

We cruised on a sunny day, just to enjoy the mighty Hudson and see the majestic America castles high on the riverbanks. This is a great way to relax on a busy trip.
