Italian Market
With your guide leading the way, peruse the array of shops, many of Italian heritage. Wander past cheeses, chocolates, spices and olive oils that tempt your taste buds, and discover myriad produce stalls, as well as a kitchen store. Along the way, stop to talk to market vendors and hear fascinating tales about the development of South Philly over the decades. Your guide can help you find a bargain with special discounts. Continue on toward a variety of Mexican stores in an area where the boxer Rocky Balboa (famously played by Sylvester Stallone) ran through the streets on one of his training runs. Nearby, you’ll find a selection of Vietnamese, Cambodian and Chinese shops. Your 2-hour tour ends around noon — the perfect time to purchase a Philly cheesesteak for lunch!

You get more than the Italian Market when Chuck takes you down the south Philly streets and alleys. We learned about some amazing street mosaics along walls of this re-emerging neighborhood. You’ll see the outside/inside and back rooms of the best “old school” meat market, Cannuli’s. Also a cheese shop like none other, DiBruno Brothers. The owners everywhere shared their pride in the long history of these family operations. Definitely worth the 3 hours.

We very much enjoyed our 4 hour walking tour with Chuck our guide who not only spoke about the different parts of the city we walked through, but also provided side stories of his own experiences as well. He also got us to interact during the tour by asking some thought provoking questions. As we walked to the 9th St Italian Market, we were able to see some of Isaiah Zagar's "mirror art" on the walls of some of the side streets. Once at the market we were able to sample fresh baked bread at Sarcone's Bakery, gelato at Anthony's Chocolates, and cheese at Di Bruno Brothers. At the end of the market we were able to see Geno's Steaks and Pat's King of Steaks, two restaurants that serve Cheesesteak sandwiches. We ended the tour by heading back to the Magic Gardens (side entrance so didn't have to wait in the long line to get in as they limit so many people inside) where Isaiah Zagar originally had his studio which has since been turned into a museum to display his "mirror art". Request Chuck when you sign up for this tour and you'll be in for a very educational experience!

Have lived in Philly for years but never got to know the Italian Market until today! Loved the tour. Nina was so much fun and enthusiastic and full of great details. She knew all the great spots. Now I feel I can go back and know where all the treasures are!
