Italian Market
With your guide leading the way, peruse the array of shops, many of Italian heritage. Wander past cheeses, chocolates, spices and olive oils that tempt your taste buds, and discover myriad produce stalls, as well as a kitchen store. Along the way, stop to talk to market vendors and hear fascinating tales about the development of South Philly over the decades. Your guide can help you find a bargain with special discounts. Continue on toward a variety of Mexican stores in an area where the boxer Rocky Balboa (famously played by Sylvester Stallone) ran through the streets on one of his training runs. Nearby, you’ll find a selection of Vietnamese, Cambodian and Chinese shops. Your 2-hour tour ends around noon — the perfect time to purchase a Philly cheesesteak for lunch!

My wife and I recently moved to Philadelphia from Boston. While I've been impressed with all that this city has to offer, I have missed the "chowderhead' camaraderie that went along with being a Bostonian. It was not until the Italian Market Tour with Chuck that I felt as if we regained a semblance of what had been noticeably absent since our relocation. Not only was Chuck's obviously love and knowledge of South Philly contagious but it also resulted in probably the most authentic tour we have ever taken (and we are nerdy tour enthusiasts). Because of Chuck and the unique set of individuals we either encountered or learned about on the tour, we now believe that it may actually be possible embrace this "gritty city" - a notion I would have considered inconceivable just a week ago. Referencing the 76er's philosophy to our bumpy transition from Massachusetts, I know I am supposed to be patient and simply trust the process - this became a lot easier due to Chuck's great tour. Thank you for such a wonderful afternoon.

Thank you for such a wonderful review! Chuck'll be thrilled to hear you had a great time, and we look forward to seeing you in Philly again sometime, maybe with the amazing Chuck on our Philly on Tap beer + history tour!

My husband and three teens had the pleasure of having Annett lead us on the Italian Market tour. She provided a tour with a good balance of information, letting us explore/shop some of the stores on our own, introducing us to shop owners who then gave free samples and/or explained some of the shop's history. Although we ended up running over time (probably because of our taking our time shopping in certain shops) we didn't feel 'hurried on' by her.We were the only ones signed up for the tour at that time so it was a private tour. It was a really nice way to gain an introduction to that area of the city. Really worth the money, and, if you can, ask for Annett!

Miles, what a great day it sounds like you had with our guide Annett! We love being able to connect our travellers with the locals -- that's really what we're all about. Come back sometime to take our Beyond the Cheesesteak tour, and we'll introduce you to some of the best food trucks and locals of a very different part of our city!

OK, so I live two blocks from the Italian Market and I go there frequently. I booked this tour as an outing with my mother, who was visiting Philly for the first time. The tour was appropriate for both of us, giving my mom an orientation to the area and its culture and history, and offering me the chance to learn new things about my adopted hometown. Our guide Nina is a lifelong Philadelphian knowledgeable about local lore. The tour was well paced, informative, and fun. Sure, you could walk through the Italian market on your own and find some good food and interesting shops, but you'd miss Nina's insider info and the chance to taste some yummy treats.

Thanks for your feedback and rating! Nina's pretty much synonymous with the Italian Market, and we're glad she could share her passion and local knowledge on your tour. We especially love when other locals join our tours to learn more about their city. Feel free to join our other neighborhood tours -- Philly on Tap beer tour or our Beyond the Cheesesteak food tour -- to learn more!
