Actually, it was better than I imagined. I didn't realize the market tour would include samples from the various markets and personal interactions with the business operators. We had bread samples, cheese, tortilla chips, olive oils and vinegars. My tour guide, Chuck was supremely knowledgeable and personable. There was ample time to peruse the stores as well as learn about the historical aspects of the market and the neighborhood. I didn't know what to expect from "South Philly" but the mystique was dismissed and I felt very comfortable. I even went back to Ralph's for a spaghetti dinner later in the week. I stayed behind after the tour to shop at incredible Fante's kitchenware store and Molly's used books and records. I hit the Philly Aids Thrift store as well and would recommend it highly.

Ever since I took the walking tour of Boston I have been in love with this concept of getting to know the city I am visiting. I took the Italian Market Experience with the added part of visiting the works of Isaiah Zagar. Our tour guide was ALEX and he was very good. Alex took us through the Italian Area and what made it different was we stopped at different stores in the area to shop and get to know the area. We shopped for oil, bread, kitchenware and meat. The Zagar Mosaics are all over the area but we got to see his studio and the area beside his studio. I have never seen such a display of mosaic work. It made me feel that the artist was very troubled. The tour took about three hours and be prepared to do some walking. Great tour and great guide!!
