There is a wonderful experience waiting for you at the Jamestown Settlement. The staff is professional researchers and they are paid to answer any questions.

So if you like history but aren't a museum person (that's me I HATE standing to read some big long paragraph about a piece of pottery) then this is an excellent stop especially with kids. This isn't the original site that's a few miles down the road and is a separate fee because it's run by a different organization. This is a recreation settlement and Indigenous People's village . It's fully staffed (like there was an actor at nearly every building) and everyone was full of great information and interacted with the kids really well. Bring water bottles if you are coming in the summer because it got HOT. The kids especially loved the musket demonstration and helping carve the dugout canoe. Their is also a museum inside the visitor's center that was very nice. It was busy with it being the summer but there is so much room to spread out it never really felt crowded anywhere. TIP if you have a large group that might split up into smaller groups or older kids that will venture off on their own set a meeting time and place. Cell signal was very spotty all throughout and at one point my extended family group (6 adults and 4 kids) separated and I didn't think I was ever going to get everyone back together again.

We were visiting from the UK and it was a wonderful living history experience, everything was so well done and the museum was very informative. Highly recommend visiting to understand the issues the early English settlers faced. We recommend starting here and then going to the Historic Jamestowne which is the archaeological site.
