My daughter and I took this trip in August of 2018 on recommendation from a friend. We booked the slightly shortened tour (I think it was 2.5 hours instead of 3) and I believe this shortened time is what led to the miserable part of our journey. My guess is that, during the busy season, they book 2.5 hour tours so that they can get one more tour in during the day and take in more money. It comes at a great cost to their customers because to make up for the time, they zoom back to the dock over rough swells and it is a very painful experience!
I was on the boat with the driver that led the way for another boat to travel behind us on the flat part of our wake. I have a picture of them following close behind us on the flatter water as we barreled through swells and were slammed down on our seats. I had to hold my hands clasped behind my neck to prevent my spine from getting jarred so badly, but it did not do enough to help, as I ended up having neck pain for at least two weeks after this bouncy trip. We screamed in pain several times when the boat pounded down on the water after getting airborne, but we did not slow down.
To top it off, the driver of the boat was on a hydraulic seat that comfortably bounced up and down the whole way back - so he was basically on shock absorbers the entire time while we suffered. The funny thing is that the group on the boat that followed us was on the same shuttle, and they complained about how bumpy the ride was, but they had the smoother ride by far by being in our wake. I would have rather seen whales for half the time and taken a more comfortable ride back to the dock. Oh, and I should add that the shuttle did not return to the ship until the smart people who booked the longer tour with other companies were back on board with us, so that extra half hour that H & M gained was a wasted time for us just sitting and waiting to leave. Never again for me!!! It was the worst part of my Alaskan travel experience, by far.
