Our kayak tour wasnāt only a highlight of our cruise to Alaska; it was one of the highlights of my entire life and something Iāll never forget. The next time we return to Icy Strait Point we will for sure be contacting Cody and going on another kayaking adventure with him.
Rewind to before our cruise, when I was planning our vacation. I was looking at options for what to do during our stop with the Disney Wonder in Icy Strait Point, which is my favorite port of call on Alaska cruises because it gives you an opportunity to meet locals who actually live in Alaska, as opposed to college students from the lower 48 who just come in for the summer months. I came across Fairweather Kayaks and really wanted to book, but I was also terrified of kayaking, as was my husband. I emailed Cody with questions that emphasized how freaked out we were about kayaking. He wrote back to me immediately and did his best to calm our fears, which lead us to book the kayak tour. After booking, whenever we contacted Cody with a question, he was super quick at replying and extremely nice.
For all those who are nervous about kayaking itās important to note that the kayak tours go out with a safety boat, captained by Codyās mom Michelle (this is a family business through and through) together with their dog Mocha. So thereās always a boat there with you for worst case scenario situations, plus Michelle takes pictures of you during the tour, which is amazing.
Thereās also a kayaking excursion offered through the ship (not with Fairweather Kayaking). We chose the private tour with Fairweather for two reasons:
1. Difference in max number of participants. On the ship excursion the max is 30 people. With Fairweather the max is only 10.
2. The ship excursion begins by the cruise dock, goes to the small boat harbor in Hoonah and turns around there to head back. This means that most of the time youāre kayaking in waters shared with big boats and barges. With Fairweather you start the tour at the small boat harbor in Hoonah - where the ship excursion ends and turns around - and you head further away from the cruise ship dock, so itās a much more secluded and quiet experience.
Upon arrival in the morning we found out we were the only two who had signed up for the first tour of the morning, meaning we got a private tour with Cody!! Unbelievable. We were so scared and freaked out, my husband and I barely said anything to each other all morningā¦We were greeted and outfitted, got into our kayak and within a few minutes our fears had completely gone away. We knew we were in great hands, the kayak is extremely stable and the water wasnāt at all as cold as we feared it would be. Amazingly, we were calm and having the time of our lives in no time at all.
Cody is one of the nicest people weāve ever met. He really cares about his business and it shows in everything he does. He was paying attention to what we wanted and reacting accordingly. When it seemed like we wanted to talk about his life in Hoonah - he shared, when it seemed like we wanted to enjoy the silence of nature - we paddled in silence in the stunning beauty of the waters of Hoonah.
At the beginning of our tour we were lucky enough to spot a humpback whale breaching multiple times on the other side of the bay. Cody could tell we were interested in the whale, so he changed up the tour and we just hung around there for a while, whale watching. The whale took an interest in us and swam across the bay only to surface right next to us (!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and swim next to us for a magical minute. With tears in my eyes I was speechless for the first time in my life. That was one of the greatest things that Iāve ever experienced.
Of course, seeing a whale isnāt guaranteed during a kayak tour, just like you might see a bear but we didnāt. We did see bald eagles flying and trying to catch salmon, we saw salmon jumping, Star fish and jelly fish. Even if we hadnāt seen the whale, kayaking with Cody was just amazing beyond words and I canāt wait to do it again!
If youāre in Icy Strait Point/Hoonah go kayaking with Fairweather Kayaking, itāll be one of the highlights of your vacation without a doubt.
