We did this tour in Aug 2022 and it was a blast. It was so much nicer to do something active and meet real locals than to stay in the more "touristy" area of Icy Strait Point with the gondolas. Our guide Cody was awesome - good at taking care of what we needed and going with the flow. They take pictures of you during the tour so you can relax and enjoy the experience. And their dog Mocha is the absolute cutest. Plus they even pulled up a crab pot and let us each hold and kiss (I guess it's an Alaskan thing) a huge king crab. Highly recommend!

We were a mixed bunch, three adults and four kids (ages 6 through 11). Prior to the excursion I was concerned with the varying strength and agility of our group to navigate Alaskaā€™s waters. But all concerns were put at ease once we arrived. The landscape is beautiful. We were lucky to have clear skies. However, that made the winds pick up and the currents harder to navigate around. We didn't mind, though. Those that were stronger rowers, sailed further ahead. Those of us with the younger kids stayed closer to the marina. Safety is their priority. Two guides accompanied us on separate kayaks. A third followed in a safety boat. When our group got separated, they made sure a guide remained with each guest. The guides are also friendly and funny. They provide everything you need for a comfortable ride. There's a cute gift shop within walking distance. I purchased a Christmas ornament with a salmon head hand painted by a local to remember this experience. Each time I look at it, I think of the salmon jumping around the kayaks. Thank you, Cody and team, for the memorable experience!!!

Our kayak tour wasnā€™t only a highlight of our cruise to Alaska; it was one of the highlights of my entire life and something Iā€™ll never forget. The next time we return to Icy Strait Point we will for sure be contacting Cody and going on another kayaking adventure with him. Rewind to before our cruise, when I was planning our vacation. I was looking at options for what to do during our stop with the Disney Wonder in Icy Strait Point, which is my favorite port of call on Alaska cruises because it gives you an opportunity to meet locals who actually live in Alaska, as opposed to college students from the lower 48 who just come in for the summer months. I came across Fairweather Kayaks and really wanted to book, but I was also terrified of kayaking, as was my husband. I emailed Cody with questions that emphasized how freaked out we were about kayaking. He wrote back to me immediately and did his best to calm our fears, which lead us to book the kayak tour. After booking, whenever we contacted Cody with a question, he was super quick at replying and extremely nice. For all those who are nervous about kayaking itā€™s important to note that the kayak tours go out with a safety boat, captained by Codyā€™s mom Michelle (this is a family business through and through) together with their dog Mocha. So thereā€™s always a boat there with you for worst case scenario situations, plus Michelle takes pictures of you during the tour, which is amazing. Thereā€™s also a kayaking excursion offered through the ship (not with Fairweather Kayaking). We chose the private tour with Fairweather for two reasons: 1. Difference in max number of participants. On the ship excursion the max is 30 people. With Fairweather the max is only 10. 2. The ship excursion begins by the cruise dock, goes to the small boat harbor in Hoonah and turns around there to head back. This means that most of the time youā€™re kayaking in waters shared with big boats and barges. With Fairweather you start the tour at the small boat harbor in Hoonah - where the ship excursion ends and turns around - and you head further away from the cruise ship dock, so itā€™s a much more secluded and quiet experience. Upon arrival in the morning we found out we were the only two who had signed up for the first tour of the morning, meaning we got a private tour with Cody!! Unbelievable. We were so scared and freaked out, my husband and I barely said anything to each other all morningā€¦We were greeted and outfitted, got into our kayak and within a few minutes our fears had completely gone away. We knew we were in great hands, the kayak is extremely stable and the water wasnā€™t at all as cold as we feared it would be. Amazingly, we were calm and having the time of our lives in no time at all. Cody is one of the nicest people weā€™ve ever met. He really cares about his business and it shows in everything he does. He was paying attention to what we wanted and reacting accordingly. When it seemed like we wanted to talk about his life in Hoonah - he shared, when it seemed like we wanted to enjoy the silence of nature - we paddled in silence in the stunning beauty of the waters of Hoonah. At the beginning of our tour we were lucky enough to spot a humpback whale breaching multiple times on the other side of the bay. Cody could tell we were interested in the whale, so he changed up the tour and we just hung around there for a while, whale watching. The whale took an interest in us and swam across the bay only to surface right next to us (!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and swim next to us for a magical minute. With tears in my eyes I was speechless for the first time in my life. That was one of the greatest things that Iā€™ve ever experienced. Of course, seeing a whale isnā€™t guaranteed during a kayak tour, just like you might see a bear but we didnā€™t. We did see bald eagles flying and trying to catch salmon, we saw salmon jumping, Star fish and jelly fish. Even if we hadnā€™t seen the whale, kayaking with Cody was just amazing beyond words and I canā€™t wait to do it again! If youā€™re in Icy Strait Point/Hoonah go kayaking with Fairweather Kayaking, itā€™ll be one of the highlights of your vacation without a doubt.
