We were able to see several manta rays - including one doing dozens of barrel rolls right beneath us - over and over ! Amazing !

Manta Rays Weā€™re Cool - however this company is very low budget compared to the other companies out there. Our experience was very amateur compared to the other. Our lighting rig was a modified surfboard with a car battery glued to the top of itā€¦ very cheap compared to the outfits the other guys were using. Our love got barely lit up the water and theirs light up the whole area underneath them. This must be why our guide took us up to the bigger better companyā€™s light. The other guides were explaining what we were seeing and our guide explained nothing? We did get to see the Mantas and that was really cool. Just remember that you get what you pay for. I should have booked earlier than 10 days in advance.

Thanks for joining us Kingjohn. We're glad to hear that you got what you paid for and were able to see Kona's friendly mantas. Mahalo for your time and we hope to see you again. Aloha. For those reading I would like to touch on the different snorkel board and light setups. The majority of manta operators use a paddleboard or surf board as the base of their snorkel board. (There are a few others who have a bigger and more complex setup.) Lights connected to a car battery or holes put in the boards filled with can lights are used to help attract plankton. There are two types of lights, "blue" lights which are dimmer and "white" lights which are brighter. In all the years that we have been running tours we have found that the mantas prefer to stay and feed longer under the snorkel boards with the dimmer blue lights as it is not as bright and as harsh on their eyes compared to the white lights. Mantas will still feed under the white lights but they have a strong preference for snorkel boards using the blue lights. I would also like to point out that the snorkel guides who do these tours know each other and are in the water nightly with one another. If there are few mantas in the area they work together to try and give ALL the guests in the water the best experience possible to view them by linking up their boards. Often boards are linked together to make a "manta runway" where mantas can start feeding on one end and travel down the length of the runway to the other end. This works great when you only have a couple of mantas and over a 100 humans eager to see them. Out of respect for one another and to not talk over each other, one or two guides will take the lead role of providing and explaining different manta facts when many people are linked up together. Mahalo for reading.

Great company and memorable experience! Our original reservation had to be canceled the night of, as there was a tiger shark (!!) spotting in the area. They easily rebooked us to the next day at their other harbor location. We were the first boat out and were treated with a sunset "cruise" to the snorkel location. Within 5 minutes of getting in the water, we saw our first manta ray. Saw several over the course of about 30 minutes in the water, and they get so up and close! Very other worldly to watch them glide from the depths to the surface. The captain and guide were both very informative and friendly, treated us with cookies and hot chocolate once you get back on the boat!

Thank you Sarah. I'm pleased to hear that you had some flexibility and that we were able to accommodate you both on our Honokohau tour. The sunset trip is a great way to start you adventure before the manta magic begins. Mahalo for taking the time to leave us a review and we hope to see you again. Aloha.
