I had heard the Manta Ray snorkel was the best part of visitors experience but had an ok time and was left underwhelmed. Hawaii Island & Ocean Tour staff were friendly but it felt rushed, perhaps because we were the last tour of the evening. I wish the tour guides were cognizant that a separate tour group had left just 5 minutes ahead of us out of the same port. They had a group of 20 and the lights from their boards attracted all the Manta Rays. Our group went out early since we were all ready but I would have preferred to wait for our actual start time to stagger the tour groups on the water. I know you can't train the Manta's but wish Hawaii Island & Ocean tour had proactively staggered with other groups. Not worth the small group experience when a separate boat of 20 people is going to take over anyway.

My wife and I did this tour in 2018 and we went again in 2019. Let me tell you...a night and day experience! I did not think it could get any better than 2018...2019's experience literally blew our mind! I must say that it would be impossible to get a better manta ray experience then we had on our last trip...IMPOSSIBLE!!! We are talking about one of time experiences here...one that is remembered for a lifetime! Okay, there were about 8 manta rays circle below us off and on. I counted 8 in one shot! They kept coming and coming and coming right to the surface of the board we were holding onto. They would literally skim the board and your face and body over and over and over again. I literally cannot count the number of times this happened. If I took a guess, I am not exaggerating with the number 50! Some manta rays would do this looping affect 3-4 times in a row, gobbling up all the plankton. Absolutely breath-taking! Truly truly the moment is surreal! I have been to all the Hawaiian islands many times and I have to say my top three favorite activities on Hawaii is: #1) Walking to the lava and playing with it and watching it enter the ocean #2) The manta-ray experience #3) The Stairway to Heaven (on Oahu) Don't miss this! My wife hates the water and I was impressed that she took the initiative to get on the boat and then into the water! She almost did not get off the boat, but she was way thankful she did. This is the type of experience you tell your children and your children's children!!

We booked this adventure in hopes of seeing the famous Manta Rays. We found the location very easily and checked in with Haley. When it was our turn Haley took us down the the boat, which had just come back with the earlier group We got in to the boat, which was a little challenging. But they had it down and helped us get it. We headed out for 3 or 4 minutes and were already at our site. Dillon was in the water waiting for us. They gave us noodles to put under our waist. In all honesty they popped out a couple of times and we had to find them and put them back. It was the hardest part of the night. Once in the water all we had to do was old on and put our head in the water. The minute I put my head in the water one of the rays was right there. They put on a fantastic show for us. There were 4 mantas and they swam in circles right in front of us, over and over again. They would run into us once in a while. We never touched them, but they had no problem running into us. It was fantastic. We stayed there for about 45 minutes. It got choppy towards the end and it was harder to hold on. My husband gets sea sickly easily and ended up getting back on the boat before anyone else. I was worried that he would get sick sitting in the boat as it was so choppy. But he had taken Dramamine and was fine. I used a GoPro and was unhappy with my pictures. The mantas got so close to us that it was hard to get a good picture. The videos turned out better. We wore long sleeve dive shirts and shorts and were fine. No one got cold. Getting back into the boat was hard, especially because it got so choppy while we were out there, When we were done with our 4 minute ride back they helped us back out of the boat. Haley had hot chocolate, hot tea and coffee. She also had some snacks for us. The team was great and we really appreciated them. l I would go back with them any time.
