We apparently went on one of the 3-4 nights a year that bristle worms (AKA fire worms) come to the surface to spawn. We were not told about the worms until we arrived at the dive site. At first the fire worms stayed away and looked somewhat pretty. However, as the night went on more and more worms came to the surface and they became aggressive. Our trip was cut short because of the worms. There were so many worms that the trip after mine was cancelled. There were four manta rays that night, but their beauty was hard to enjoy with all of the bristle worms around consistently getting in your field of view and stingy you on any exposed skin. It would have been nice if we were warned about the worms back on shore and given the opportunity to return another night.

Watching manta rays swim through the ocean feeing on plankton was thrilling. Their graceful movements and unusual shapes was one of the most beautiful things I've seen in nature. Haley, Capt. Randy, the guide in the water with us ā€“ everyone involved in the excursion was fun to be with. Their love of the manta rays was evident in the enthusiasm with which they talked about each individual ray we saw, including Big Bertha and a new pup that had not been seen before. This adventure was called the number one thing to do on the Big Island, and I agree.

We highly recommend this company. We were greeted, filled out some paper work and fitted with wetsuit and snorkel unless you brought your own which is fine with them. There set up is from a parked vehicle 25 yards from the boat ramp and there is street parking. Inflatable hard bottom boat from a floating pier is less than 5 minute ride to the manta ray snorkel spot where the other guide with the lighted surfboard modified with handles awaits for you to enter the water. You just float and watch the amazing show the manta rays put on for you.
